Hi Maia, I have vague memories of having done this once in the mists of time. As I recall the medley went from English to contra, starting with one of the swoopy stately ECDs, working to something more punctuated like Childgrove, a 'old style' proper contra chestnut and ending with some popular barn burner contra at the time. Worked just fine. It also dealt well with the potential issue of moving between proper and improper dances. The ECD was all proper so there was only one transition from proper to improper about 2/3 of the way through. The idea is well past due for a modern retake! This week on the ECD list, there has been a huge discussion of ECD medleys. Not surprisingly, some people dislike the idea of ECD medleys, others enjoy them. Going from ECD to contra (and back?) adds another layer of complexity. Here are some highlights from the ECD discussion which may be useful... With some careful planning with the band to make sure the tune/key changes worked you could segue from one dance/tune combo to another and it could be a really fun challenge for the dancers. Agreed with whoever-it-was that you'd need to keep the dance figures within a fairly narrow range of complexity, but that leaves you with a LOT of dances and tunes to work with. I absolutely would not spring this on a group including new beginners, but dancers who are comfortable with no-walk-through dances should be able to handle it just fine. With the right band, the right choice and order of dances, the right prep for band, caller, and dancers, and a group of willing dancers who know in advance that this is what they signed on for - sure, why not. I wouldn't do it at a regular dance party, it would be something for a workshop or session at a dance festival, where those who didn't like the idea could avoid or choose something else. The dances could be familiar or not. And yes, straightforward with figures that will be familiar to (most of) those who are there. It can help if each dance starts approximately the same way, so you have a moment to adjust to the new tune/time signature. The band has to be able to make a clear indication of any rhythm changes as one dance ends and the other begins. I thought "Jump Jim Joe" *was* the less-racist alternative to "Jump Jim Crow" (a dialect song and dance from 1828 which pretty much kicked off the whole enterprise of blackface minstrelsy). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jump_Jim_Crow However, here's somebody in 2012 dropping "Jump Jim Joe" from the classroom because it's a direct descendant of "Jump Jim Joe", so some people apparently feel that scrubbing the burnt cork off is insufficient: https://www.josieholford.com/beneath-the-surface-the-hokey-pokey-and-jump-j…. Peter Amidon and the New England Dancing Master have written and published a similar singing game— different melody and words (original) called, I believe, “Jump in the Valley.” I feel like “Jump Jim Joe” is mostly NOT done these days due to it being a direct adaptation of “Jump Jim Crow”. I myself wrote an original singing/ jumping dance called “The Popcorn Dance.” Written roughly to the tune of Soldiers Joy. It is yet unpublished but I am happy to share it with individuals directly. Interesting thread, everyone! I do not know if the ties between “Jump Jim Crow” and “Jump Jim Joe” are melodic or lyrics or both. i just know that I don’t do it anymore, and in the world of music education it is less and less done. It definitely resides in the category of Dances With Racist Roots. For me, it was a beloved dance/singing game, and I did not feel comfortable “just” altering it. Instead, I was inspired to write something that would have some ties to folk music….and would have some of the same appeal as JJJ. I am attaching my creation of "Popcorn Dance", which is loosely based on the tune, Soldiers Joy. Please use with joy and playfulness! Regarding the New England Dancing Masters and JJJ, they have renamed their collection (which was originally titled “Jump Jim Joe”), as Rise Sally Rise.
