Hi there everyone, glad to join the list.
I’m curious about duple minor contra sequences that are written for 3-part
AABBCC tunes. Can anyone share or point me to any such dances?
My question is partly inspired by Gene Hubert’s *Fan In The Doorwa*y,
written for three part *slip* jigs. I’m pretty sure I’ve run across
sequences written for AABCC tunes (no repeat on the B). I might even have
spotted some 4–face-4’s written for full 3-part tunes on ibiblio (the
database seems to be down as I write this so I can’t confirm). But so far
I’m coming up empty for AABBCC duple minors.
If you’ve got anything I’d be much obliged.

I'm pretty sure that Claude Ginsberg's tune, Oddville Cupola, is AABBCC.
Erik Weberg wrote his dance, "Ad Vielle," specifically to go with that
tune, though the dance is written in the usual AABB format. Maybe not what
you're looking for. I can't pull the dance up on caller's box right now,
but here it is:

That’s interesting to know, thanks. Not what I’m looking for but I
appreciate learning about the dance and the tune. I wasn’t familiar with
either and I like them both!
I’m definitely looking for 48 bar/96 beat sequences that will align
precisely with a three-part tune. I’m thinking of the tune Banish
Misfortune in particular.

'Oddville Cupola' is actually AABBCCDD. Yup, 64 bars.
So any standard-format contra dance will 'fit',
you just go twice through the dance for once through the tune.
It's track 2 on KGB's "Volga Notions" album.
The notes say:
The most striking architectural feature in Coon Rapids, Iowa,
is the large cupola, visible for miles. Claude heard this tune
while slogging up the 764 steps to the cupola apex.
However, I suspect they're kidding.
Mike Richardson wrote a double-length English dance to go with the tune.
It's called "Cupid All Do Love", an anagram of the tune name.

Going by memory only, I believe there's a double becket called Major Hey by
Charley [last name escapes me], the pattern is AABCC though. I've called it
and dropped a bit of choreography to make it AABB, I'm betting there's a
way to add choreography for an AABBCC structure.

It's by Eric Hoffman and it is indeed 40 bars. I wouldn't want to drop any of it
though.

The costs of everything have gone up post-COVID. What are you charging for one-off dance
events, aka One Night Stand dances? Assuming:
* you, the caller, are running sound and providing sound equipment
* there is no band
* It is 90 minutes give or take
* it is NOT a wedding
* no alcohol (hat-tip to Tony Parkes - if alcohol, double your fee!)
If the assumptions above are not true (there is a band, it is a wedding, there is alcohol,
etc), how does that change your rates?

Hi Seth,
Not sure if my UK perspective will be relevant. I charge 225
GBP plus petrol. The cost is the same whether it is twenty minutes or four
hours (I have done both!) but usually more like 2.5 to 3 hours. Whatever
the length it means I can't do anything else that evening.
Weddings are the same price. I only charge more if they want
me to travel more than an hour each way - then I make the price prohibitive,
but they still occasionally pay!

A clarification: "If alcohol, double your fee" is something I heard years ago
from a few veteran callers. I used to charge a bit more for "wet" events than
"dry" ones, but found I had to work just as hard at the "dry" ones, so
started charging the higher rate to everyone.
Currently I ask $475 for corporate or private events, $400 for nonprofits. I've been
told by a couple of top callers that I could/should be charging more, but when I've
tried raising the rates, I've gotten so many turndowns that I make more money with the
lower rates.
My rate includes travel within ~1 hour of home, and once I'm there, I'm willing to
stay up to 4 hours. I always recommend 1.5 to 2 hours of actual dancing if people
aren't used to it, but I make it clear that I'll call as long as people want to
dance. Almost never does anyone take me up on it; typically they've had enough after
90 minutes.
Rate changes: I ask $500 if it's a wedding, to cover repeated interactions with the
client before the day. (Top DJs often ask a LOT more for weddings than for other family
parties.) I'm willing to dicker if I don't have to bring, set up, and run sound,
but I have to be sure that the gear and the operator will be adequate. My one-nighter rate
for calling & sound is the same whether or not there's a band - obviously it's
more work to do sound for 4 people than for 1, but the energy of a live band makes up for
it.

My going rate is $50 per hour, portal to portal, plus a $50-$100 charge for
a sound system, and $0.62 per mile rountrip.
It may seem high but ONS dances are my specialty, and I am turning dances
down. My minimum rate is $300.
This Sunday I have two gigs. A one hour at $350, and a 2 hour at $500.
Both of these are with pre-recorded music. I generally add $300-$350 per
musician when I use live music, and then the sound system is $100. I am
careful to explain that my fee is all inclusive and includes travel to and
from, insurance, music and music licensing, a professional sound system,
all necessary instruction, and calling the dances.
Alcohol has never changed my rate. I might add an hour or two to a
wedding, because they are never on schedule. I require a non-refundable
$50 deposit for weddings, a non-refundable, but reusable 50% deposit on all
uncovered outdoor dances. (This deposit can be applied to a mutually
acceptable date in the future.)
All that being said, I may on occasion take less. Soon I will be calling
at a regional bluegrass festival for less, but they have included an all
festival pass with camping privileges and limited hospitality. If I am
connected to an organizer, or to an organization, I may call for 50%, or
free.
There are always exceptions, but my standard quote is as described above,
and most customers accept the quote.

I price things approximately:
- $75-150 for just the sound equipment rental, which is basically just
passing my cost from who I'm able to borrow it.
- $250 - $500 for the calling itself, which can depend on how long, whether
there's alcohol, experience of dancers, whether it's a nonprofit/good
cause, other factors, etc
- $50-150 for sound setup, which can depend on how many band inputs, how
long I need to lug heavy speakers up steps and whatnot, etc.
- travel $ appropriate to distance
- another $200 or so for prerecorded music. Honestly, it's just such a pain
to have to manage both calling and music player, choose music in advance
and adapt on the fly, etc. And, if you're not paying ASCAP fees or
expressly have the artist's permission or are using public domain music,
it's technically not legal.
My feelings are that if people don't want to pay artists at least a living
per hour wage, then it's not sustainable and not ethical to undercut a gig.
(Again, notwithstanding considerations like charity or nonprofits, friends'
events, helping out financially struggling org, etc)
I live in Massachusetts, so that may affect cost of living in the area.

Hi all, I call David Kaynor's Shutesbury Reel pretty often.
One thing I've noticed about calling a 48 bar dance is the fact that the dancers seem
to be "pre-programed' to "go back to the beginning" after 32 bars (or
at least programmed not to have to remember any more than the AABB). This makes it hard to
let go of calling after a couple times through, even with an experienced group of dancers.
Actually the same is true for Cherokee Shuffle which is only 36 bars and I am quite sure
for any dance that is not 4 x 8 measures AABB.
I actually think it's good to challenge experienced dancers this way,.. but be
prepared!

announcement" as it "appears now, in fashionable life, a crime to attempt

I wrote an AABBCC dance about a year ago that I haven't had the chance to
call yet, based on Don Flaherty's Heartbeat Contra. I wrote it because I
wanted a simple 48-bar dance to pull out for a fun change of pace without
too much added difficulty, but all the ones I could find were far more
complex than I wanted (with uncommon/advanced figures that many beginners
may find daunting). Each move of this dance are all figures that I often
have taught in the first half of our regular monthly Contra Dances. I've
been debating in which order to put the Robins Chain/Long Lines, so feel
free to play with it and do what works best. If anyone chooses to call the
dance, please send me feedback!

AABBCC tunes. Can anyone share or point me to any such dances?
My question is partly inspired by Gene Hubert’s *Fan In The Doorwa*y,
written for three part *slip* jigs. I’m pretty sure I’ve run across
sequences written for AABCC tunes (no repeat on the B). I might even have
spotted some 4–face-4’s written for full 3-part tunes on ibiblio (the
database seems to be down as I write this so I can’t confirm). But so far
I’m coming up empty for AABBCC duple minors.
If you’ve got anything I’d be much obliged.

I saw Erik Hoffman's 40-bar dance "Fred Park's Long Drive" online, and
got
to wondering about a 32-bar version without the B2 (ocean wave Rory
O'More), thus going from the hey to the partner balance & swing. Surely
I've seen and danced such a sequence, but I cannot recall the title.

On my dance, Fred Park’s Long Drive, it can, of course, be converted to a 32 bar dance by
eliminating the B2 Rory O’More figure (something I considered). But I think, with the
recent passing of Fred, it would be appropriate not alter it—at least for the next some
period of time.
I seem to recall it was first called at Warren Wilson College. I was traveling with the
String Beings, and Fred appeared there after a long drive. He liked it.
Fred and I spent a number of nights staying up into the wee hours talking about dances,
teaching, and our lives. I miss him. Besides being a renown story teller, as a dance
caller and teacher, Fred was, among other things, a choreographer, innovator, musician,
historian, mentor, and friend. I miss him.

I wasn't planning to alter your dance, and indeed I was hoping to call it
soon. I just wanted to cross-reference the similar sequence (now identified
as Heart of Glass) but couldn't recall its name. My original note was
likely unclear.
Thanks for sharing your memories of Fred. He was indeed a special person
and I learned new things whenever I was privileged to dance when he was
calling.

Hey JJ,
I called 96 Heartbeats last night to great success at the Palouse Folklore
Society monthly dance in Moscow Idaho! So you can envision it, we had a big
(for us) turnout thanks to the annual pie social extravaganza and the
colleges being back in session, and despite the wildfire smoke. It was the
multigenerational mixed experience crowd we usually get. At least 60 people
filled up the floor at the old one-room schoolhouse where we have our
summer dances.
96 Heartbeats was the first dance after the break, and it was *very* well
received. By then the crowd had thinned down to largely the 20’s and 30’s
crowd who were exuberant and stompy. In B1 I chose to call it as written –
LLFB before chain, and I was glad I did . It created a more extended flowy
section (chain to hey) that mirrored the percussive sequence of balances
fromC2.2 to A2.1. It was nice to have two full B&S to separate those two
vibes without it taking up half the music.
Summing up, it had a satisfying ebb and flow narrative, and made effective
use of the longer form. I was able to drop out fairly quickly. For a change
of pace that’s fun and accessible, it hit the mark, and it got an extra
loud whoop from the crowd at the end. Thanks for sharing it!
