Hi all,
My barn dance series has been doing well with an occasional contra dance
added in, and progressions are working. I feel "safer" including contra
style progressions as 4-face-4 dances, though, especially when I have a
wide age range of dancers. I know "trail buddies" can help the kids point
in the right direction each time.
Coconut Cream Pie ( https://contradb.com/dances/1548 ) is getting a lot of
play lately, but I'd like to have a few more of that style in my deck. It
would be nice to have a 4-face-4 both before and after the break, without
it being literally the same dance.
Any simple favorites? Bonus points if they are a california twirl
progression to feel "familiar".

Balance the ring; California twirl partner to face a new line.
As usually happens in a double contra, you stay with the other couple in your own line
but alternate ends.
For the partner swing, the left-hand people need to move forward and to the left
as your partner approaches.
When you're out at the ends you can do the figure as a two-couple set.
Just make sure that the final California twirl leaves you facing the approaching line of
four.

No Swing my dancers dont care whether there is one or not.
You could change the first half of B2 into a Partner Swing make them
listen to the music since they have to stop the Swing in a place that is not
familiar to modern dancers.

Appreciate all these suggestions--my dancers are probably more at the Apple
Pie Quadrille level this year, but some day I'll figure out how to
introduce rory o'more! The Devil's Backbone also looks really neat--I'll
have to hold it in reserve for a day when my regulars:newbies ratio is
high, but if I do that I bet we can be successful with it.
