Dear Callers who may be attending RPLW,
Chrissy Fowler and I have decided to pass along some of the calling
books that we no longer use, or of which we happen to have duplicates.
I thought that offering them for "silent auction" and fully donating
all proceeds to the RPLW funds, would be a great way to support this
weekend that we all love so much. So with the full support of the RPLW
Board, we will be displaying these books during the weekend, in the
lunch area. You will have an opportunity to look them over, and make
your bids throughout Saturday and Sunday morning. We will close the
auction just after lunch on Sunday. Cash or checks (made out to RPLW)
happily accepted. The books include some older editions, some RPLW
syllabi, dance collections, as well as advice about calling. There are
about 20 books total.
Please join us in what we hope will be the First Annual Book Auction!

Hi Linda,
I am a caller from ATL and just danced your Old Time Elixir
Number 2 at a dance weekend in Chattanooga. Collected the dance, of
course. I don't know what RPLW is and likely can't attend, but such
books are what I am collecting just now. Could I just buy those that
are of interest and you give the proceeds to the RPLW fund? If that
seems a bad idea, I would be interested in hearing which books and dance
collections would be worth trying to find, especially used. At this
point I gig far enough away from home that it is a break even
proposition at best. I just love sharing my love of dance. I have
written a few, but not enough for a book. I have been gifted a few
books, but know there are many more out there to be had. Hope you don't
mind my asking.

Dear Andrea,
I am HAPPY to hear from you; questions such as yours are always welcome.
I am going to take some of this discussion off line, since a lot of it
may be interesting to you, in particular, but not so much for the
entire Shared Weight list. But my most important question is this: Is
your interest in *collecting* dances, or are you in the process of
collecting hard copy books? If the former, then there are literally
*hundreds* of web sites on which callers/choreographers share their
dances. For example, most of the RPLW syllabi are now on line at the
UNH LIbrary website
(http://www.library.unh.edu/special/index.php/ralph-page-dance-legacy-weekend
). If, however, you wish to collect hard copies, then this is the
list on which you want to advertise that fact! If you were to put out
a general request, and have participants reply to only you, I am sure
that you will be able to attain some great resources.
Also, the idea of the auction is for folks at RPLW to have a friendly
"contest" and therefore encourage higher bids, which all go to a very
worthy cause. After the auction, I would be happy to chat with you
about any books that did not find a new home.

New subject: Mystery Dance ID time
We have a dance that is very similar to Bob Isaac's "The Judge", but which
appears to pre-date it. The main difference is in A2: the diagonals are on
different directions and the order of the moves is reversed. Just interested
to know if anyone can identify the Mystery one. I've listed both below.

difference - in Spare Parts instead of a Right & Left Through the
choreography calls for Pass Through/Cal Twirl.

I wrote to Jim Kitch and he confirmed that the dance is indeed "Spare Parts"
as Will Mentor indicated. I'm posting a part of Jim's reply below because I
thought his comments on R&L through interesting.
From Jim Kitch:
Will Mentor is absolutely correct; the dance you are asking about is "Spare
Parts", which I wrote (in the late 1980's or very early 1990's, I believe)
for a band of the same name that I was calling with at the time. [Will M.
has the choreography correct as well.]
BTW, IMHO a pass-through-and-twirl IS a right-and-left-through -- at least,
it is what the majority of dancers do today when a right-and-left-through is
called for. (I'm ignoring the with/without hands question, the norm of
which varies depending on where you are.) I only specify the California
twirl in "Spare Parts" because, in that dance, it sets up the next action
much better than a conventional courtesy turn does.
