I've been listening a lot lately to Elixir's album "Rampant" and Wild
Asparagus's "From the Floor Up". I really like them just as upbeat
music to listen to. KGB's waltz album "The Red Light of Evening" is in
that class, too. What are some of your favorite contra band recordings,
and what is it about them that really gets your tail wagging?

Grey Larsen, “The Gathering”
Frank Ferrel, “Moxie”
I've found that many other contra recordings, even from bands I like live,
just sound flat. Probably either poor microphone choice or too much
fiddling by the recording engineer.

Might I suggest albums by Phil and Vivian Williams. They may not specifically be contra
albums, but they offer several traditional dance albums with music from or heritage. I
especially like Bluegrass Hoedown by Williams& Bray for practicin squares.

In addition to those mentioned in this thread, the three Airdance CDs will always be among
my favorites. So much talent in one band.
Speaking of talent, whenever a non-dancer wants to know what contra music sounds like, I
play the Big Bandemonium CD The Big Bang. Everyone can relate to the big band sound, and
by calling along with it people can hear how the figures go with the music.

I second the nod for Perpetual e-Motion. Nice blend of traditional tunes
with a techno-ish feel. Great grooves and all that sound from only two
people.
I also listen a lot to Latter Day Lizards Sleeping on a Rock. Great energy
for recorded music and you can imagine Peter Barnes with his impish grin as
he contemplates his next bit of creative musical genius.
