I was calling for the Rochester (NY) English dancers last night, and included a rendition
of Hull's Victory with English styling. I did an old version with very nice symmetry
(and no partner swing) that I got from Northern Junket. See

Excellent, jaunty music was provided by Laurel Sharp and Barb Seppeler. The dance was well
received.

New subject: Hull's Victory
Hull's Victory was the first dance that I called after break at the Palo
Alto contra dance this past Saturday night, in homage to both the 200th
anniversary and to Charlie Fenton's tradition of starting the second
half of the evening at the San Francisco contra dance with a chestnut
back when I started dancing and calling. More than a little bit of
grumbling from one or two of the hot-shot types that didn't like
standing around, but that was more than made up for by the two young
ladies (I guessed college age, one of my compatriots thinks they may be
younger than that) who told me at the end of the evening, "You called a
chestnut! That was so awesome!"
It was interesting to see the various ways that the inactives occupied
their time while the actives took their trip. It was even more
interesting to hear almost no clapping by the inactives in a crowd that
loves clapping on Petronella (and, increasingly, Rory O'More) figures.

Carol Ormand called Hull's Victory in Ann Arbor, MI on Saturday. No grumbling that I
heard. But then, when you have Carol calling and the Latter Day Lizards putting out tunes,
how can one really complain about anything? 8-)
The inactives at our dance were thoroughly entertained by either grooving to the Lizards
or swinging another inactive in neighboring line or simply watching the 1s do their thing.

At the Mad Robin dance in Burlington VT the fiddler commented after
how well that tune is matched to the dance.
Last week (what a coincidence!) I was doing some work on the
classical library at the local public radio station when my ears
perked up hearing the B part of Hull's Victory in a Gavotte by Corelli
written over a hundred years earlier.

And for those many of us who dance/call English Country Dance, this
Gavotte is very familiar, since it is the tune used for the dance
Corelli's Maggot. Very much a crowd pleaser!

Hull's has so far been called three times at the Concord, MA Scout House in
two weeks. It has been interesting to see how things have gone each time
and the dancers' reactions/experiences. Understandably, there was a little
pre-dance grumbling as things started up on the third occasion's
walk-through, but once the music got going it was OK.
A couple of tips/observations gleaned from these repeats:
- Accentuate teaching the same-gender R&Ls through, including a tip on
taking up all the time available - many folks have no idea how to do it and
most were finishing way too early (this was probably aggravated by all
three callers suggesting a twice-around allemande, so folks got used to
rushing)
- Only one of three callers went for forming short sets (done across the
hall) - it seemed to me that the unusualness of that formation made it take
significantly longer to line up. I was in a short line at the bottom of the
hall with my partner and folks kept trying to tack on sideways! It was a
full hall, so there were only limited options...
- If you're going to mention the history of the dance, know it (and how
to pronounce key names in the story) [?]
- If you want folks to *hear* the history info, I suggest you put it
between the walk-through and the music/dance starting
It's been fun dancing it (ind instructive to me), but even this

I observed once and danced twice, but never in the true FP set. The last
time with the across-the-hall sets, the fireplace wall was designated the
"head". For that one I danced with many of the FP set crew and they seemed
to enjoy it fine (several were flummoxed while dancing, but didn't let that
get in the way of having fun).

Hi
Last Thursday a small group of us (6) danced Hull's Victory (trad version
with allemands 1x)
to Rodney's Millers recording. The R&L were a bit tricky and sometimes #2 M
forgot to be
in position to for the forming wave.
We enjoyed it even though we missed the anniversary date. I had looked up the
history, but
only managed a garbled version. We had a nautical connection though, one of the
dancers, Annette, in 1977 was the first woman to sail single-handed back and
forth across the Tasman Sea.

I'm curious about something else. By the third time Hull's was called,
were the dancers noticeably better at it? For example: Were they less
likely to rush the R&Ls or to be confused about who goes forward and
who backs up? Where they more likely to be on time coming up the middle
and casting off? Were they more likely to finish the twice-around
neighbor allemande on time and less likely to forget that the actives
still had an allemande to do in the middle before the second balance?
Stepping back from the specific details, was there any noticeable change
in the styling or in the general level of confidence?

Several were but the crowd was not always the same composition (the three
times were across two dance series), so there were folks experiencing it
totally anew each time. Overall, I think the general level improved over
time.

date (August 19th) at Mainewoods Dance Camp. He reprised it later in the week.

Yes there have been multiple sightings of Hull's Victory
Here in central Illinois on Aug 19,
(i) a local fiddler, while bicycling in the country roads just east of Urbana, saw a
cumulus cloud formation which resembled a warship chasing after a slightly larger
warship. Visible cirrus clouds seemed to form projectiles directed between the two
ships.
(ii) a local banjo player, while undergoing a past life hypnotic regression, envisioned
himself at a party on Aug 19, 1822 in celebration of the tenth anniversary of Isaac
Hull's victory, where Isaac Hull was the guest of honor, and almost all the attendees
participated in the dancing of Hull's Victory, done without the partner swing (which
would have been considered scandalous at the time). After the hypnotic regression he
checked the wiki page about Isaac Hull and was certain the portrait of Hull on the wiki
page depicted the party's honoree. (Please no jokes about banjo players)

That video is of the third instance, FYI. The camera is placed halfway up
the hall on the fireplace mantel.
BTW the videographer, Frank Hsieh, can be seen in the lower right corner
starting at 0:15 or so (white shirt, close cropped hair). He makes
extensive recordings of the CSH dances which Chris so helpfully tags with
titles.
