dancers who either have difficulty hearing the caller or have difficulty
remembering calls. It is free and works directly in all mobile phone
browsers. A dancer records 8 calls in his/her own words during the
walk-through and the recordings are played back repeatedly while dancing
until playback is manually stopped. Youtube has a short video demoing

You can try it out completely anonymously.
I would greatly appreciate learning any reaction you might have and

Hi Brian,
I'm curious how well this works in practice; doesn't it need to be
closely synced to the dance tempo to avoid the calls getting off the
music?
It looks like it defaults to 128bpm, which is a good bit higher than
I'd expect at most dances. I wonder if 120bpm might be a better
default setting?
It also looks like this will have problems with bands changing tempos
while they play? Which happens a lot (for both intentional and
unintentional reasons).
Have you considered integrating beat detection? Then it wouldn't need
the user to specify the speed, and could adjust smoothly with any
tempo changes during the dance.

I have enjoyed contra dancing here in Atlanta since the late 80s.
I have enjoyed studying Larry Jenning's great books but I don't think I
would like calling as much as I enjoy dancing.
I listen to contra CD's in my car frequently and have come to really enjoy
the music.
I have enjoyed photographing dancers in a way that can be printed as a
single picture, but as 3 (or even 8) panels.
My dance/life partner no longer enjoys contra so my attendance at dances
has been spotty for about 8 years.
Senior round-robin doubles tennis provides me with my exercise regularly
now, even during much of the pandemic.

and a handful of other apps. I have noticed dancers who cannot hear or
cannot understand the calls, and I have also noticed dancers who seem to
have a hard time remembering calls, especially new dancers. So I thought
maybe a partner or a friend could help by recording abbreviated calls
during the walk-thrus.
Another free, browser-based contra-related app of mine is

organizers have used it to show their dances on the map.

Your concerns are right on target.
It would be easy for my to change the default from 128 bpm to 120.
I have not been able to test the app live because of the pandemic. I hope to get feedback
from others.
There exists apps that detects bpm but I have not tried to embed such a feature.
