Hi all,
I've got a dance in my sketchbook that I think is ready for a bit of
feedback after trying it with a small group of dancers last night, and
I'm hoping to solicit some from more experienced choreographers before I
call it again. I'm also open to name suggestions if you have any (I hate
naming things)!
Untitled, Duple becket
A1. Neighbors balance across & pull by right, partner pull by; shadows
balance and box the gnat [1]
A2. Pull by and partner swing
B1. Balance and petronella; neighbor swing
B2. Ring balance, pass partner by right [2], neighbor pull by right;
next neighbor balance and petronella left
[1]: The shadow _balance_ in A1 is outside of your minor set along the
lines.
[2]: On the _pass by_ in B2 give a little tug on your outside hands to
get momentum. This is really another "pull by", but "pull by right with
outside hands" is a mouthful and confused the experienced dancers.

Any thoughts, critiques, etc. that I can learn from would be

P.S. I originally had a balance before the neighbor swing too, so the
swing was effectively just switching sides. Maybe I should have called
it a roll away and just had no neighbor swing, but the experienced
dancers were not pleased and wanted a full neighbor swing so I caved
even though the petronella into a swing feels a bit "smooth" compared to
the rest of the dance; I could still go either way on that one.
P.P.S. I'm also aware that the petronella left is not common to say the
least. I've seen it once or twice and always enjoyed it, but maybe it's
best to steer clear? I originally had that as a circle right 3 and
figured that if the experienced dancers were already going to be
confused I might as well swap it for something where I can fit a balance
like the rest of the dance. I'm not sure if this logic actually makes
sense, but it felt fun to me. Last night I called it with the circle
right, so that's the only part of the dance that hasn't been tried on
real dancers.

New subject: [External] New dance feedback
Thinking about this more: if I were to swap the first "regular"
petronella to a petronella left, then dropped the neighbor swing in
favor of a square through 3 I think that would work and keep the pull by
theme going. I'm sure that a certain set of dancers would still be
furious with me for calling something without a neighbor swing, but
maybe that's something to experiment with the next time I try it!

Definitely an intriguing dance! For what it’s
worth, I foresee danger
in having both a standard (right) petro and a left petro in the same
dance. Since both of these moves start from basically a standstill,
there’s no momentum hint to remind dancers which one they’re supposed
to be doing – at best, you’ll get a lot of of people doing the wrong
one by accident, at worst there will be a lot of collisions.
If you’re going to do a left petro, I might suggest doubling down and
really making it the choreographic hook of your dance, because right
now it feels a bit like an afterthought. (And it’s sufficiently novel
that if you want people to do it right, it’ll behoove you to give
them lots of practice!)
Getting rid of the right petro would be a good start, but you could
also take it one step further and find another place to incorporate a
left petro (ideally with nice flow out of it so it feels like it’s
supposed to be there, and isn’t just arbitrary—you do a good job of
this with the existing left petro in here being followed by a RH
pullby).
Feel free to ignore, of course, but that’s my two cents!

You could do a cross trail through (i.e. two changes of a circular

RE: the right hands, that makes sense to me, but since it

hands (in a ring), I couldn't really swap

have their right hand free, but the robin coming at them
would have
their left hand free. I'll think more
about that more; the

felt good since you're coming out of a swing and already have
hands with
your neighbor, but it does rather break the flow of all the

so maybe I'll drop it.

Thank you Maia! This is great feedback and not an angle I'd thought
about before, I really appreciate it!

That's a fair point, maybe I just drop the pull by entirely and make it
a by the left and call it a day. It does feel nicer with hands to me,
but if it doesn't work it doesn't work.

Whew, you scared me there!
RE: the right hands, that makes sense to me, but since it was outside
hands (in a ring), I couldn't really swap hands (since the larks would
have their right hand free, but the robin coming at them would have
their left hand free. I'll think more about that more; the ring balance
felt good since you're coming out of a swing and already have hands with
your neighbor, but it does rather break the flow of all the pull by's,
so maybe I'll drop it.

I believe you're improper during the progression (the pull by right to
next neighbors in the beginnig of B1), so the petronella left puts you
back in becket for the start of the dance, no? This is the only thing
that's changed from last night so it's quite possible I've broken it,
but I'm going through it in my head and I think it's equivalent to the
circle right 3 that used to be there (or at least, I can't figure out
how you'd be in becket at the end unless I've mis-typed something
earlier in the dance that I'm not seeing).

Hi all,
I've got a dance in my sketchbook that I think is ready for a bit of
feedback after trying it with a small group of dancers last night, and
I'm hoping to solicit some from more experienced choreographers before I
call it again. I'm also open to name suggestions if you have any (I hate
naming things)!
Untitled, Duple becket
A1. Neighbors balance across & pull by right, partner pull by; shadows
balance and box the gnat [1]
A2. Pull by and partner swing
B1. Balance and petronella; neighbor swing
B2. Ring balance, pass partner by right [2], neighbor pull by right;
next neighbor balance and petronella left
[1]: The shadow _balance_ in A1 is outside of your minor set along the
lines.
[2]: On the _pass by_ in B2 give a little tug on your outside hands to
get momentum. This is really another "pull by", but "pull by right with
outside hands" is a mouthful and confused the experienced dancers.

P.S. I originally had a balance before the neighbor swing too, so the
swing was effectively just switching sides. Maybe I should have called
it a roll away and just had no neighbor swing, but the experienced
dancers were not pleased and wanted a full neighbor swing so I caved
even though the petronella into a swing feels a bit "smooth" compared to
the rest of the dance; I could still go either way on that one.
P.P.S. I'm also aware that the petronella left is not common to say the
least. I've seen it once or twice and always enjoyed it, but maybe it's
best to steer clear? I originally had that as a circle right 3 and
figured that if the experienced dancers were already going to be

figured that if the experienced dancers were already going to be
confused I might as well swap it for something where I can fit a balance
like the rest of the dance. I'm not sure if this logic actually makes
sense, but it felt fun to me. Last night I called it with the circle
right, so that's the only part of the dance that hasn't been tried on
real dancers.

Hi all,
I've got a dance in my sketchbook that I think is ready for a bit of
feedback after trying it with a small group of dancers last night, and
I'm hoping to solicit some from more experienced choreographers before I
call it again. I'm also open to name suggestions if you have any (I hate
naming things)!

A1. Neighbors balance across & pull by right, partner pull by; shadows
balance and box the gnat [1]
A2. Pull by and partner swing
B1. Balance and petronella; neighbor swing
B2. Ring balance, pass partner by right [2], neighbor pull by right;
next neighbor balance and petronella left
[1]: The shadow _balance_ in A1 is outside of your minor set along the
lines.
[2]: On the _pass by_ in B2 give a little tug on your outside hands to
get momentum. This is really another "pull by", but "pull by right with
outside hands" is a mouthful and confused the experienced dancers.

Any thoughts, critiques, etc. that I can learn from would be

P.S. I originally had a balance before the neighbor swing too, so the
swing was effectively just switching sides. Maybe I should have called
it a roll away and just had no neighbor swing, but the experienced
dancers were not pleased and wanted a full neighbor swing so I caved
even though the petronella into a swing feels a bit "smooth" compared to
the rest of the dance; I could still go either way on that one.
P.P.S. I'm also aware that the petronella left is not common to say the
least. I've seen it once or twice and always enjoyed it, but maybe it's
