Hello all,
I live in a small town called Luck in Northwestern Wisconsin. I would like to
start a monthly or bimonthly contra dance here. I have only been to a few
contra dances, I don't know any dances, and certainly don't have any experience
as a caller. I know a band who I think is well capable and interested in
playing the music, but we don't know of anyone in the area that is familiar with
or could lead a contra dance. So my questions are two:
Does anyone know of anyone in the Polk county area capable of being a caller?
if not
How can a complete beginner like me learn the system and enough dances to become
a caller? Are there any books, resources, workshops, etc. that would help me?
Anything to point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Jonathan,
Congratulations on starting on what is hopefully a long and rewarding
journey :-)
Top of the list for reference material at the meta-level is the
Country Dance and Song Society: www.CDSS.org
There's loads of material on there, I'd suggest poking around a fair
bit. Everyone there is very friendly and happy to talk with you about
this type of thing.
It looks like Luck is maybe an hour and a half from Minneapolis and
Saint Paul. I'd strongly suggest getting in touch with the contra
dancers in that area (maybe

callers there (and in a major metropolitan area there should be),
they'd possibly be willing to work with you and/or travel an hour and
a half to call up at Luck. Folks will travel a bit to help the dance
community (in north Texas, a 4 hour drive one way to call for another
dance seems to be the norm). If there aren't callers in the area, they
must be bringing folks through to do their dances, in which case
possibly you could hold a Friday dance to their Saturday and try to
book the same talent.
I'm sure other will have more information, but there's a start.

Besides the suggested from Jonathan, if you have the resources for a little
travel in January, come to the Ralph Page Legacy Weekend in Durham NH.

It's a lovely small festival with a focus on callers. There will be at least
one, usually two excellent caller workshops, there will be LOTS of callers
there (and we have lunch together), the dancing will be excellent, and the
music will be inspiring. Also, join the email list Shared Weight
www.sharedweight.net . That list is specifically for new and developing
callers and it's that group that usually organizes itself to meet for lunch
at the Ralph Page festival.

good for you! i was in the same position a number of years ago in wichita, ks. i went to
manhattan, ks, and took an all-day class with enid cocke. we started the wichita dance in
2002 with two callers, and the dance continues to this day (though i no longer live
there).
when i lived in the midwest, there were tons of great callers in wisconsin and minnesota,
and great interest in mentoring and carrying on our tradition. once you start asking
around, i'm sure you can find someone willing to work with you.
seems like there are a lot of posts directing you to specific resources - this one is just
to tell you that you can do it and it'll be easier and more fun than you know!
