I am seeking wisdom from U.S. callers who’ve recently crossed the border into Canada to do
a gig. Words to say or not say? Documentation of gig needed? Problems or ease you have
had?

Should not be a problem - NAFTA is good for US musicians/callers, but bad for Canadian
ones. Few restrictions that I know of unless you're going to make thousands of
dollars. In any case, I usually just say that I'm going to perform for a folk dance in
a church basement and they tend to lose interest very quickly...
One caveat to this is that there are some restrictions - or at least used to be - for DJs
trying to come into Canada to perform. If you're planning a techno contra event, for
instance, you might not want to mention that. I once rented DJ in Canada to avoid that
hassle at the border.

But don't make the mistake we did of trying to cross at a tiny border
crossing. If you're going in commercially they're likely to send you (as
they did us) to a larger crossing.
(Back when you could do Burlington-Ottawa-Montreal in a weekend we were
driving to Ottawa. Blindly following GPS directions I think it took us on
US 11 to a small crossing north of Rouses Point. They made us turn around
and cross on I-89.)

Living near Buffalo, NY we cross a lot. Generally if I am just dancing I
promote the dance to the border person - they pass us through pretty
quickly. IF I am calling, I do not mention it specifically, I say I am
going to a dance at... Less information is more. However, as Chuck
mentioned, if you are being paid huge sums that will be reported to CA,
then I think you probably should say you are calling at ... As a tax
preparer you should report all income received and there are special forms
for monies earned on foreign soil.

I did this a couple weeks ago and had no trouble at the crossing. Was traveling with the
band, we answered questions honestly, said we were performing at one contra dance,
explained what contra dancing was, and they let us through with no fuss. Americans
performing limited engagements do not need work permits:

The organizers did provide me a "Letter of Engagement" with the details of the
gig, which might be wise to have just in case, but no one asked me to produce it at any
point.
