Hello everyone,
Thanks to Bob Isaacs, I'm calling my first full evening this weekend at Swingin'
Tern in New Jersey. It's my home dance so I have a good idea of the dancers'
ability, but it will be hot and humid. I plan on running dances shorter with
longer water breaks.

Dear Marguerite,
Congratulations! I hope you have a wonderful evening....I am sure you
will do a great job!
Your program is a well conceived combination of dances with lots of
variation, balance/smooth alternations, and moves which are not
repeated too often. Great job! You obviously spent a lot of time
putting it together. Since you quite clearly would like some feedback,
I would like to offer the following thoughts:
I rarely end the first half with a partner only swing. My preference
is to put a partner-only swing dance somewhere in the middle of the
dance half (this would also be true of your second half-see next
comment). This plan has the advantage, especially when it is hot, of
giving the dancers somewhat of a break from a lot of swinging. Since
they will be having a break after the 6th dance, having them dance an
energetic dance as the last dance before the breat certainly would be
acceptable! Maybe a switch of dance #4 and #6 would do the trick. But
this is a minor point!
For the same reason, I would but Good Friday in as the second or even
third dance of the second half.
Sarah's Journey has a very high "piece count"; it may be that a dance
with longer count moves, such as a hey dance, might work better, and
not be so tiring.
And finally, a point about Give and Take: as taught by Larry
Jennings, the give and take portion should be only 4 beats: 2 beats to
move toward partner, 2 counts to return home with partner, and 12
beats for the swing. The move has morphed into the more leisurely
timing, but purists use Larry's timing.

Good work! This looks like an excellent
program. I'm glad to see you write your dances
using effective word order. For those of us who
use effective word order in our calling this
makes it much easier to read the written dance
choreography. (Not to mention how much easier it will be for the dancers.)
With regard to Linda's point about one-swing
dances in the middle of each half of the evening:
Keep in mind that there are multiple factors that
determine how "tiring" a dance can be. But if
you want to insert a single-swing dance in the
first half of the evening consider making the
only swing a neighbor swing. During the first
half, integrating the newcomers should be a high
priority. It will make your job much
easier. Lots of neighbor swings will help to
reduce the perceived need to select a known
partner. With a lower "partnering pressure" the
dancers are more likely to be generous in partnering with newcomers.

It is interesting that mixers seem to be tolerated by some more than
contras with no partner swing. This may be because mixers are
seen--somewhat begrudgingly and, incorrectly I would argue--as a bow
to the needs of newcomers.

their motivation, and possibly their inclination, to integrate into

partnering with newcomers. This happens when mixers are not
announced in advance. Consider the situation when a more experienced
dancer takes the initiative to approach a newcomer and partner with
them only to learn that the dance will be a mixer. This can be
discouraging to those who put out the effort to partner with a
newcomer. If you want to call a mixer please announce it clearly and
well in advance of the partnering process.
Third, the decision to call a mixer can send several implied messages
to the regular dancers that have a negative influence. These include:
- The caller assumes that most of the regulars are not partnering
with newcomers.
- The caller assumes that most of the regulars do not enjoy
dancing with newcomers.
- The caller does not have confidence in the regulars to welcome
and to partner with new dancers on their own.
All three of these implied messages could be easily assumed by anyone
who hears the "grumbling" cited above when a mixer is announced. In
fact the implied messages are probably accurate most of the time.
Words and actions have consequences, and people will instinctively
look for the implied message rather than the explicit one. This is
how human communication works. Consider the implied messages if the
caller assumes the opposite. What if the caller assumes:
- All of the newcomers are already partnered with more experienced dancers.
- All of the regulars enjoy welcoming and partnering with newcomers.
- The caller can count on the regulars to take the lead in
welcoming and partnering with newcomers.
If the caller assumes all of the above, the caller will speak and
behave differently. For one thing the caller might be less likely to
call a mixer. The implied messages will be very different ones.

Wow.
I call mixers because it is the one and only time in an evening when the whole group is
gathered together. Instead of "my little clique" it is "all of us are in
this together" as a dancer and as a caller I enjoy that experience.
I call mixers because I find a whole evening of contra, contra, contra, contra, contra...
boring (as a dancer.) Especially if every dance has a similar piece count, pacing, and two
swings (or at least a partner swing.)
There are probably other reasons as well, but these are my primary thoughts. Any idea of
needing to twist the arm of people to welcome newcomers has not entered into it.
The modern urban contra dance scene is welcoming to people who would fit in anyway.
That's not necessarily a bad thing. It is the nature of hobby activities. Since muc
dancers go to a dance primarily to dance "what they want to dance the way they want
to dance it" then anything outside of their hobby mind-set is anathema.

Congratulations, Marguerite!
One idea (if it's not too late) for programming when it's hot, is many people
don't like to put their hands on a sweaty wrist for a star. (I don't!) So, when
it's hot, I try to avoid calling dances with wrist-grip stars except for the first
dance and the first dance after the break. I'm sure that's why in Western square
dancing men wear long-sleeved shirts and in most of the deep South, the tradition is
hands-across stars.
Most of all, remember to ENJOY AND HAVE FUN! That reminder helped me when I started
calling.
