Hi folks,
I have 4 gigs coming up this month, 1 of which is a ONS. I'll look in archives as
well, but I'm curious if folks can recommend any
good dances or tunes in an Xmas, Hannukah, Solstice, or Kwanza theme I can use. I already
have a few gimmicks, but always looking
for more.

"What Child Is This" / "Greensleeves" works fine for a waltz and can
be
substituted for, eg, "Spanish Waltz".
"Jingle Bells" is fine for a contra or a polka (and Gayle Ticknor wrote an
"English" dance to it).
"Winter Solstice" is Wendy Crouch's five-couple square English dance, not
really ONS-appropriate.
John Garden has a large book of Christmas-carol themed dances, not all really
recognizable as country dances.

One I remember was when the band played the Chipmunk Song (it is a Christmas themed waltz)
for the ending waltz and everyone started singing the few words they could remember.
Of course Jingle Bells works well if you need something with phrasing for contras, etc. -
again,you can encourage sing along if you want.

Other waltzes that work: We Three Kings, A Child is Born (though
probably not many people will recognize that last one as a holiday
song).

Deck the Halls operates like Cluck Ole Hen, so that's a possibility.
There's a recording by Smoky Mountain Christmas (on iTunes) that also has a
great boogie tune, Santa Stomp, including some tune tied to Rudolph the
Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus is Comin' to Town, Frosty the Snowman, and
some other boogie stuff, and also a "bonus track" with a medley of some
tune I haven't figured out tied to Olde Lang Syne w/a little tag at the end
of We Wish You a Merry Christmas.

A few months ago I danced a circle mixer to "Angels We Have Heard on High"
I don't remember for sure, but I think it was approximately what we know
as "An Easy Mixer," with the timing on the swing and promenade
appropriately adjusted. The whole crowd quickly joined in singing the
chorus each time through.
Right hand turn, Left hand turn
Two hand turn, No hand turn (do-si-do)
Balance and swing
Promenade and slip the clutch (ladies turn right and meet the next gent)
