Fellow musicians,
Could someone please tell me how many beats per section are in a normal singing call?
Are they normally all the same ( intro, heads heads, sides sides, end)? In patter
calling, what do callers expect for length of song? Either time wise or total beats?

In MWSD singing calls, the figures and the breaks are each 64 beats.
Done as opening break, heads, heads, middle break, sides, sides,
closer this is 7 times 64 beats for a total of about 3 1/2 minutes at
128 beats per minute.
One could do more research by obtaining the CD Shindig In The Barn:
Singing Squares by Ralph Sweet’s All-Stars (which I own and enjoy) and
figuring out how Ralph handles each of the tunes.

W/4th N, allemande L 1x
w/3rd neighbor, allemande R 1/2
w/neighbor #2, Allemande L ½ to long wave (original neighbor in R hand)
A2: Balance wave
Women loop R into original neighbor's spot while men cross set
Partner swing
B1: Gents allemande L 1 ½
Neighbor swing
B2: Long lines F&B
L hand star

New subject: Dances in the San Jose area
I have a friend in San Jose that I'd like to get started
contradancing. Unfortunately, I'm in Durham, NC. So, I'm looking
for recommendations on dances that are welcoming to new dancers in
the area, and possibly some folks that I can have take her under
their wing for the first dance or so if I can get her out to
one. I'd love for her to have some folks that are expecting her to
be there. Feel free to email me off list.
