I have a vague recollection of hearing about sung
contras one time, and was
wondering if indeed there are any, and any resources available for learning them
(from here in Australia). Just hearing Ralph Sweet on the CDSS website doing The
Auctioneer reminded me.
There's at least one. Check out the 2008 Ralph Page Dance Legacy Weekend syllabus,
online, page 47. Dave Colestock called the singing contra "The SGB Contra" to
the tune of Sweet Georgia Brown. Dave adapted the dance from one, on record (vinyl),
called "Sweet Georgia Brown Contra." More details in the syllabus. I
couldn't get the tune out of my head for weeks after dancing to it, doggone it.
Dave's on this list, so he may want to add more himself.

Hi Jeremy,
You can hear Bob Howell singing Auld Lang Syne Contra on Grenn 16018. It's very
similar choreo to the SGB.
Go to www.dosido.com and on the very top of the page is a link to Palamino
records/Hanhursts.
Follow that link and enter contra in the song search box
side A of the preview has the singing.
If you are interested in the 'song sheets' for some of the other recordings on
that page you can find
some at www.ceder.net/recorddb/query_cuesheet.php4 and search for
contra (follow contra with blank, otherwise you will find more
than you want)

And then there's the time a group got together with the band and decided, no
matter what she called, Lisa would instead get the entire group dancing
Roger Diggle's *Roll in the Hey* danced to everyone singing "Jingle Bells".
If you start with the verse ("Dashing through the snow...etc") you get to
"One horse open sleigh, HEY!" right at the start of the hey.
Rumor has it that Lisa might have been surprised but figured it out in about
three nanoseconds.

OK, let's see if I can recontruct this from a long ago hot and steamy
night. VERY rowdy teen dance up at the Farm&Wilderness camps, big open
outdoor pavilion, about 120 people, made up collaboratively on the spot
because it was a tune the camper-led band could play.
You have to imagine everyone doing this at a slow, bluesy saunter, with
lots of hip action, hand claps on the ends of the phrases (..5,6,7,Clap!).
Everyone in the hall already knew the basic community longways and
entry-level contras (Virginia Reel, Galopede, Haste to T.W)
The Hey Jude Longways
(make sure your email display window is open wide enough so that the words
line up right)
8 couple sets, divided into hands-four subgroups,
long lines forward... (hey Jude)
long lines back... (don't make it bad)
right elbow around your partner (take a sad song and make it better)
left elbow around your partner (remember to let her into your heart)
dosido partner (then you can start to make it better)
circle left in your foursome (hey Jude, don't be a fraid)
circle right (you were made to go out and get her)
star right (the minute you let her under your skin [clap!])
star left (then you begin to make it better)
top foursome down the center, (and any time you fell the pain etc)
with great display,
any way they choose, all swing after they've passed,
all move up on that little instrumental break
repeat 3x
on the final interminable Na--- Na-- Na-- NaNaNaNa-------'s, all the sets
got themselves lined up with each other into big longways sets, and the
top foursome went to the VERY bottom, next foursome right on their heels,
endless cascade style -- we let that run a little and then started sending
them out the bottom of the set and out the door. I seem to remember the
na-na-naaas being belted out long after the band stopped playing, down the
hill and back to the bunks, echoing up through the trees.
Nobody was singing the same verses at any given time so I suppose it
wasn't a truely succesful "singing " dance, and it wasn't a contra, and
it
sure wouldn't fly at Greenfield or Glen Echo -- but it worked for us at
the time. :)

Sing and dance as round - INNER circle starts
Circle Left (8) - Frere Jacques, Frere Jacques
Circle Right (8) (* then let go hands) - Dormez Vous, Dormez Vous
IN (4) and Back(4) - Sonnez les matines, sonez lez matines
Turn on spot (8) - din dan don, din dan don
* by letting go of hands at this point, the groups doing
IN and Back will be coming between those doing turning
on the spot.

Hi Jeanette, Jeremy, and all of the list,
The Sweet Georgia Brown Contra was recorded by Stan Burdick in 1984. I have loved that
tune forever, since I first saw the Harlem Globetrotters in the late 60's, early
70's (it is their theme song). I called the original dance once, but will never call
it again. It does not flow well, and has no partner swing. I rewrote the dance, and gave
it a new, albeit similar, name. It is a distinctively different dance, but flows much
better than the original. It is listed in the RPDLW Syllabus, for 2008 I think. I will
provide it here for those that have not seen it, with the lyrics I sing to it.

Dosido that neighbor gal, and then you swing her too,
Swing that gal around, face across, right and left thru,
Put her on the right, ladies cross back, and swing that's what you do,
