Hi All,
I have Settlement Swing by Penn Fix as this:
A1 Neighbor dosido to long wavy line G face out, Ladies face in, rt hand to N
Bal the wave, alle right 1x, re-form the wave
A2 Balance wave, Neighbor swing
B1 Ladies chain, over and back
B2 One’s balance and swing
I'm wondering what your instructions would be for the Balance at the start of A2?
Balance right, then left again, Or for this second long wave, Balance left, then right?

Haven't done the dance, but if it were me I'd make the second wave balance
right and left, just like the first. (It makes sense (to me, anyway), to
balance toward neighbor, Rory O'More slide, balance toward neighbor, which
gives balance R&L, then L&R, because it's working with the same person.
Nonetheless, even when that's called, only about half the dancers actually do
it.
But there's no Rory O'More slide here. In this case, you don't change
orientation with respect to neighbor; allemande 1x gets you into the same line
with the same person, so there's no real rationale for changing the balance to
L & R. Besides, balance L and R, swing the person in your right hand would be
awkward.)

Hi Nancy,
I agree with Alan. Just as in a normal Neighbor balance and swing, the
balance is
first towards then away from your neighbor, so in the wave balance right then
left would have
the nice feel to it.
Also Jeff's zesty timing for energetic, although the dance will work the
same with
allemand right 1/2 (4) just as well.

I'd love to know what the timing of the components of A1 could be. Especially, on
which beats would the balance fall?

I don't know the dance, but I was thinking somewhat along Jeff's lines. Since
you're about to balance and swing your neighbor I guess the allemande right could be
just halfway in four beats.

Michael Dyeck has the dance notated differently (as do I, since I took
it from the book); he is citing Penn Fix's original book, "Contra
Dancing in the Northwest" in which the dance was published. The A1,
B1, and B2 are all the same as in Nancy's note; however, the A2 in the
original is:
A2 (note that there is not a balance here) Previous neighbor allemande
left
Present neighbor swing
This makes for a much smoother, more interesting dance, I believe.

Hi Linda,
Interesting how the folk process changed the dance.
The timing is not so critical now as it doesn't matter so much
if the Allemand Right 1x goes past the end of A1.
This variation would work also
A1 ending with AR 1/2
A2 next N AL (1); (current) N SW

Hi all,
Last night in Ann Arbor, MI, I called both Settlement Swing and another
dance posted recently, Raeden Reel. Both went well and were appreciated by
the dancers. There were a number of new people and both dances were
approachable, yet interesting enough that I got some nice compliments from
more experienced dancers.
Re Settlement Reel, I called the version as noted below by Linda and Leslie.
I taught the two line balances as forward and back balances as it allowed
people to enjoy the feeling of the balance without having to try to think
through R and L or L and R. Seemed to work pretty well.
Raeden's Reel offered a nice introduction to the Mad Robin figure. Using the
connected right hands following the Box the Gnat really helped newer dancers
understand who passed in front of who to start the Mad Robin.
Thanks to the choreographers and Shared Weight, I have two more nice dances
in my repertoire. 8-)
