Long time dancer, first time caller.
Anyone know of any courses / workshops to improve my calling (in person or
online)? I'm willing to travel for the right course. (E.g. Meet Me in St
Louis had a calling workshop in 2024, but the schedule isn't out yet for
2025.)
My wife and I were long-time Boston-area contra dancers who are now trying
to bring the tradition to our adopted city in Austria. Almost all the
dancers are new, I'm a new caller, and I believe it would help me to attend
a class to learn more and get feedback on my technique.

I recently saw a recommendation for Pourparler, happening in DC this year
(https://nfo-usa.com/pourparler/). I've never been (though I'm considering it
now), but I understand the focus there is broader than contra and it seems to be more
about dance sharing than a *course* per se. But if your community is almost all beginners,
I somewhat think you may want to do a lot of barn dances and similar things rather than
starting with full evenings of duple minor contras, which can be challenging in a largely
beginner crowd, in my experience.

Yes. You don't want your club to be a ome-man-band. Although plenty of
dance experience is usefulfor callers a club is very fragile if there is
no-one who can step in, read your notes and help the group remember what
you've taught them, in an emergency. And grow their skills so that if
you move away the group can continue.

Workshops are really great! I took Bob Isaacs' weeklong workshop as well
as shorter workshops at a number of weekend events. I learned something
valuable in each. Many have been mentioned already.
If you're interested in positional calling, Louise Siddons does online
workshops (and is probably here).
When I was learning (still am), I would corner every high-end caller I
could, and some local callers, and ask them for advice. I'd reach out
before an event and set it up during a lunch break or something, and pick
their brain for an hour or so. Ditto organizers. I got so many helpful
tips! A few:
Video your calling and watch the videos to see what you can improve.
Warning: can be painful!
Get feedback by asking, "what's one thing I can improve?" not "how was
that?" Ask different types of people (beginners, experts, callers,
musicians, etc.).
There's nothing that improves your calling more than calling. Three
friends are enough to get started.
Work on one skill area at a time (cueing, teaching the walkthrough,
programming, mic voice, etc.). Prioritize. You can't fix everything at
once.
Clarity. Brevity. Repetition.

Hi Brian,
I just want to underscore Rob’s idea about mentors. I learned to call through a yearlong
apprenticeship with master caller, David Millstone. A grant from our local Folklife Center
paid for travel, books/CD’s, and other expenses. We met monthly and I tagged along after
him at his many gigs, gradually stepping up to the mic here and there. I then took
weeklong courses at CDSS Pinewoods Camp and John C Campbell Folk School (both linked by
others in this chain) as well as multiple shorter workshops. I can’t understate how
valuable it was to have David keeping an eye on my progress, offering tips and
encouragement. Even now, many years later, we never bump into each other without him
asking me how my calling is going. I wonder whether a similar relationship could be
possible, though virtual, in addition to or in support of whatever course/s you find.

led at NEFFA for the last two years and plan to offer in 2025. Several of the
participants, all of whom are starting dances from scratch, continue to meet remotely, by
video chat. If you'd like to participate in the video conferences, drop me a personal

Anyone know of any courses / workshops to improve my calling (in

online)? I'm willing to travel for the right course. (E.g. Meet
Me in St Louis had a calling workshop in 2024, but the schedule isn't out
yet for 2025.)
My wife and I were long-time Boston-area contra dancers who are now
trying to
bring the tradition to our adopted city in Austria. Almost all
the dancers are new, I'm a new caller, and I believe it would help me to
attend a class to learn more and get feedback on my technique.

Meet Me in St Louis will indeed have a workshop this year. Waiting to get with our caller
to see what it will be. Getting our schedule out early is not our strong point. Also -
we are currently focused on organizing a memorial dance March 1 for Bob Green who died
tragically in an auto accident late last year. That will have open calling.
We do have a monthly calling party at one of the dancers homes (yes - Bob organized that
too). It has resulted in the development of several new callers. I know other
communities have similar events. I hope you can find one near you
Also - as you know - part of MMISL is open calling and we would love to have you
participate. Calling at a dance weekend event is by far the easiest group of dancers to
call for.
