I think I see a pattern but it's not 100%:
Slide- seems to be used by a number of callers usually in
conjunction with a circle left to progress.
Shift - seems to be used, for example, after a partner swing in order
to progress.
I try to use "slide" for the Rory o' More action out of waves.
I use "shift" for both the above actions, where you're connected with
somebody, and moving sideways to interact with a new couple.
But those are just personal choices I've made up. From the context
(wave vs facing the same way), it should be clear to experienced
dancers which is needed, and for new dancers there's always the
walkthrough...
