I have seen in two venues a container for extra donations for the band.
Both dances are known to be struggling to have paid musicians rather
than canned music. I am also a co-organizer of a dance series and am
aware of the difficulty of making a guarantee to musicians while
covering the rent. Although we work with a local dance organization who
subsidizes our series as necessary, most organizers are not so lucky.
I think our dance musicians work hard and it is a fine thing to offer
them as much money as can be scraped together on their behalf. They are
obviously doing this more for love than money anyway.

Subject: Re: [Callers] [Fwd: contra dance related question]
Interesting question...
From my experience: I have been to contra dance across New England and
Mid-Atlantic areas and have never seen a special container for "tips".
I my general understanding is the admission of the contra dance pays for
the band, and usually the band is paid a guarantee and a percentage of
the door or just a percentage of the door (depending on the specific
contra dance). Some contra dances have a specific formula to calculate
what the band is going to be paid...
As a caller and dancer, I would frown upon a special container for
"tips".
