Not surprising. There's regions of dance choreographic space that are pretty
dense, with many similar dances being written. Doing the Fiddleheads-transition
on the sides is one of them. For instance, compare and contrast "Tenth Year in
Tommerup" by Linda Leslie to "Practice Petronella" by Tom Lehmann. Both of
which I assume were written independently.
That's before you start charting the various partner-swing only
variants, or variants
that have the petronella turn once and a half to swing transition
twice in the same
dance, like "Roadkill" and later variants.
I'd guess this lookalike phenomenon is from the constraints of 32 bars, using
common conventions and pieces, and trying to minimize the complexity while
using a given concept. I know I've written other people's dances numerous times,
and I'm sure there's some I don't know of.
