Dear Callers,
I'm writing a dance for 6 couples (in a rectangle, one at the top and
bottom, two on each side), and I want to know if one of the moves I wrote
already has a name.
Bottom couple makes an arch. Top couple splits and walks around the outside
of the set, each taking the side couples with them. They then go up through
the arch and back to place.
If this move doesn't have a proper name, I'm just going to call it "peel
the banana" because I feel that's the best way to describe it.

"family dances" by that name..

Isn't 'strip the willow' the same as "reel the set" as in a Virginia
reel.. I never thought the peel the banana was part of that figure, but maybe it IS!!

Strip the willow and peel the banana are not the same. Both are common
ceilidh figures; peel the banana is as Michael B. described, and as Bill
mentioned, strip the willow is the "reel the set" move in Virginia Reel or
Sir Roger de Coverley or Strip the Willow, etc.
I would call the move you've described a peel the banana, Ben, even if it's
a fatter banana than usual because of the weird formation.

My impression had been that "strip the willow" is weaving down the
middle, whereas "peel the banana" is a descriptive name for an outside
move - a head couple casts off and each line follows their respective
head to the bottom. Peel the banana is definitely better understood by
beginners/ONS dancers than cast off! Although I use both when teaching.
If the heads are casting off around a short set or a square, maybe
"cast off and promenade half way" and/or "peel the orange" might be
more evocative! idk

Strip-the-willow is two moves:
Single strip: Actives alternate turning right elbow with each other and
one of them turning left elbow with inactives on partner's side. (In
the eponymous dance, also called "Drops of Brandy", lady turns all the
gents going down the gent's side; gent turns all the ladies going up the
ladies' side.)
Double strip: Actives alternate turning right elbow with each other and
each of them turning left elbow with inactives on their partner's side.
(In the eponymous dance, this follows the single strip, and that's all
there is.)
The move shows up in some versions of Roger de Coverley / Virginia Reel
but not all (in the SF Bay Area, Dickens Fair, Gaskell Ball, and PEERS
use "lace the boot" (actives cross and go down the outside one place,
repeat to bottom)). In "Orcadian Strip the Willow", it's nothing but
double strips starting every 16 bars from the top of a long line. It
certainly shows up in other ceilidh and barn dances.
You'd think "strip the willow" would be "peel the bark from the
willow";
I don't have an explanation for the name.

If you squash you square up so the sides are close together you get a 6
couple longways and Peel the Banana is a common term for describing the
move where, in a longways set, the top couple, followed by the others,
casts and the top couple makes the arch at the bottom and the others
come up under the arch. Given that your dance is in rectangular
formation and the bottom couple stays still and makes the arch, it might
be better to find a different term. However, you could still use the
visual imagery of "peeling the banana".
