here's another idea - when i first moved to boston in 2003, i was invited to
call a greenfield dance that was the same night as the peterborough fall
ball, or something like that - i'm sure i was the only caller who wasn't in
peterborough that night!! but hey - it was GREENFIELD, and i was a new
caller.
anyway, a SMALL crowd appeared that night, including a family (3
generations!) dragged along by a college-age type who had danced at school,
or something like that. we did some easy square dances, which were suitable
for the grade-school kids and grandma, etc.
when the family left at the break, i had 6 dancers, including myself, left.
i suggested we do a hambo and a waltz and call it an evening, but the
dancers said "we would love to hambo if we only knew how!"
fortunately, i teach hambo. so we did a hambo class for the second half of
the evening and everyone (including the organizer) went away happy. but it
could have been a waltz class or any other scandy-type turning dance that is
regularly done in this area.
i'm sure that wouldn't work at every venue (fortunately, the musicians were
up for it and we were gender-balanced!), but it was just the ticket on this
particular evening.
