Seeing your chart finally spurred me on to add our info to the mix. Our Woodstock VT Third Friday Community Dance has a wonderfully successful family dance (80 + people) which includes a localvore soup/bread/cheese dinner, followed by a moderately successful contra dance (15-40-ish people). We charge $8 for dinner and dancing but we don't charge for anyone under 18 so our finances are a little dicey. We have a super-generous local business sponsor who covers the cost of the hall and a monthly advertising sign on our town green (the big way everyone in town knows what's going on) so he contributes $130 per month. We run Sept-May, not in the summer. Our money looks like: Band: We take $50 from the take at the door for the soup ingredients for next time, and split the rest among band members. We have a large house band of 8 folks, and they typically leave with about $20 each. Caller: I am the regular caller and I volunteer. When I need a sub, we pay them the same share that the band gets, or sometimes I donate money personally to bring it up to a more attractive fee Sound: Our band received a very generous anonymous grant a while ago to buy our own sound system, so we do that and there's no money involved. Three of us volunteers run the Fermilab barn dance series about 30 miles west of Chicago. http://www.fnal.gov/orgs/folkclub/ The schedule is the second Sunday evening September through June, plus the third Sunday afternoon November through April. So, 16 dances per year. Admission is $6 ($3 for ages 12-18 and over 65, free under 12) We typically get 10 to 40 people these days. We've had ups and downs over the years. We get the venue free. It is a former dairy barn of peg and post construction that dates from somewhere between 1896 and 1910. Insulation, heating (but not AC), and plumbing were added in about 1970 when it was adapted to be a meeting and party space. We also have a disco ball. Caller and band split 80% of the door. Our 30 year old agreement (from when we charged $3, if I remember correctly) sets the minimum to be divided at $100. Over the past few years typically it has been $25 to $35 per person. We don't have a sliding scale based on band size, but sometimes band and caller agree among themselves on something other than an even split. We have a sound system and one volunteer runs it. -Dave Harding

Attendance in Farmington, Maine is generally 20-40, Hall is $100 but currently the hall is paid for by a generous dancer.
