I certainly do dances that would function as waltz contras - eg, Gary
Roodman's "Winter Dreams" - at English dances all the time, but I don't
recall having encountered one at a contra dance.

I have occasionally called All The Threes by John Meechan. However,
this would be more suitable in the UK than the USA as it does not have
any swing in it!

I wrote a waltz contra this summer, as a tribute to Tulsa, OK caller and
dance organizer Wesley Brown, who died in July. It's very easy, just make
sure the dancers get halfway around to the beat.

Here's one with contra-ish moves that I wrote for an English audience:
BONNY AT MORN

10/27/2005; revised 10/30; 11/05; 11/06.
Tune: per Barnes (black book), but 32-bar (16-bar A, BB)
Minor-key waltz; moderate/slow
Longways duple IMPROPER or Sicilian Circle (but probably better as a
longways
so that halfway around lines up with a wall).
A: 1-4: Neighbors gypsy 1.5 finishing close to neighbor for
5-8: neighbor ballroom position waltz halfway round, opening facing
in on
other side of set with man on L, women on R; keep hold of
inside hands.
9-10: women give right hand to each other as in chain and pull by
11-12: women give left hand to partner's RIGHT hand; raise joined hands in
arch as she goes under and he goes forward to finish in ballroom
position, pointy end facing in line of direction.
13-16: waltz halfway around set; open up facing in, with man on L.
[MEN progressed and on original side of the set; WOMEN not progressed and
crossed over.]
B1: 1-2: Holding near hands on the side of the set, Set r&l
3-4: Petronella turn (traveling turn single) one place to right around
the minor set.
5-8: Face NEIGHBOR up and down; three changes of a circular hey,
no hands. (In more detail, that's two brisk changes and a
leisurely
one, more like a half gypsy.)
B2: 1-2: Men cross (first corner places)
3-4: Women cross (second corner places)
5-8: Partners turn two hands all the way around;
open facing new couple to start again.
Teaching notes:
(1) Men Start the gypsy in A1 on LEFT FOOT, women on RIGHT FOOT, in order to
be on the correct foot for the waltz round. Emphasize spiraling
in and taking all the music for the gypsy.
(2) Make sure people get the timing on the three changes of R&L (1 bar,
1 bar,
2 bars) so that they're in place to cross at B2. There's a tendency to
either
stand stupefied for a bar and start late or take two bars for each pass.
(3) Some people require to be told that you waltz CCW around your minor set.

I regularly call "A Dance for Terry" by Don Armstrong. A wonderful dance
that I ask the dancers to pretend we are elegant and imagine the ladies are
wearing hoop skirts... and open hand ladies chains all to waltz time.

Hello Hanny,
There are two called waltzes that Ive used at contra dances: Circle
Waltz, and Duke of Kents Waltz.
Circle Waltz is a wonderful way to begin.

both show the choreography I enjoy teaching the most because the couples
waltzing time is only 8 beats, and can be done as a two hand turn, which
feels doable for anxious or beginning waltz learners.

feet needed to be, and to notice the pattern of the moves, to let the
music [Ashokan Farewell is lovely and clearly phrased] come into their
bodies and arms and feet. Dancers could choose to step23, step-2-3, or
just move forward and back. We did spend a few moments on ladies
three-step roll and the gentle-manly assistance with a little weight in
the handholds, but just a brief description; we went one time through the
dance, moving, then once through the dance, imagining the moves to calls,
and then began with the music. In this video, Peter Amidon sets the pace
and the mood with bows and sighs. Choose words, make suggestions that seem
appropriate to the group you are with. And Peter is absolutely right about
what happens when the caller no longer speaks; I teared up as the circle
became full and round and rhythmic and the room was quiet but for the
swish of dancing and the lovely tune.
Duke of Kents Waltz is an elegant tune worth seeking out, but the dance
can go with any contra dance waltz tune.

I wrote such a dance once at the request of a local musician. She had
written a tune intending it to be a contra tune, but it kept coming out in
waltz time. It didn't quite have the feel of a waltz, so she asked me to
write a dance. It's called Potter's Promenade. And it was never a
mainstay of any of the dances, but it has been called in Ohio and Kentucky
a few times, and was always well received.

A1 Men pass left to start half a hey for two - ladies stay put (12); With
neighbor promenade across (12)
A2 Ladies pass right to start half a hey for two - men stay put (12); With
partner promenade across (12)
B1 Long line forward and back (12); On the right diagonal men pass left for
a half hey for four (12)
B2 Partner gypsy and swing (24)
"Hey for two" was the best description I could think of for the move I
wanted, which for the men is "Pass each other by the left, walk around your
neighbor with your right shoulder to her." And for the ladies is the same
thing but with shoulders swapped. A lot of people end up doing gypsy-esque
moves for this bit,
It can be done with really any waltz music, but works well with livelier
tunes. If anyone would like the music it was composed for let me know.
Typically the way Pam would handle things would be to start with the tune
Potter's Promenade, switch to another tune and then come back with PP for
the end.
