Hey JJ,
I called 96 Heartbeats last night to great success at the Palouse Folklore
Society monthly dance in Moscow Idaho! So you can envision it, we had a big
(for us) turnout thanks to the annual pie social extravaganza and the
colleges being back in session, and despite the wildfire smoke. It was the
multigenerational mixed experience crowd we usually get. At least 60 people
filled up the floor at the old one-room schoolhouse where we have our
summer dances.
96 Heartbeats was the first dance after the break, and it was *very* well
received. By then the crowd had thinned down to largely the 20’s and 30’s
crowd who were exuberant and stompy. In B1 I chose to call it as written –
LLFB before chain, and I was glad I did . It created a more extended flowy
section (chain to hey) that mirrored the percussive sequence of balances
fromC2.2 to A2.1. It was nice to have two full B&S to separate those two
vibes without it taking up half the music.
Summing up, it had a satisfying ebb and flow narrative, and made effective
use of the longer form. I was able to drop out fairly quickly. For a change
of pace that’s fun and accessible, it hit the mark, and it got an extra
loud whoop from the crowd at the end. Thanks for sharing it!

PS. FWIW the band played Banish Misfortune – the musical phrasing meshed
with the dance phrasing fine.

I wrote an AABBCC dance about a year ago that I
haven't had the chance to
call yet, based on Don Flaherty's Heartbeat Contra. I wrote it because I
wanted a simple 48-bar dance to pull out for a fun change of pace without
too much added difficulty, but all the ones I could find were far more
complex than I wanted (with uncommon/advanced figures that many beginners
may find daunting). Each move of this dance are all figures that I often
have taught in the first half of our regular monthly Contra Dances. I've
been debating in which order to put the Robins Chain/Long Lines, so feel
free to play with it and do what works best. If anyone chooses to call the
dance, please send me feedback!

My question is partly inspired by Gene Hubert’s *Fan In The Doorwa*y,
written for three part *slip* jigs. I’m pretty sure I’ve run across
sequences written for AABCC tunes (no repeat on the B). I might even have
spotted some 4–face-4’s written for full 3-part tunes on ibiblio (the
database seems to be down as I write this so I can’t confirm). But so far
I’m coming up empty for AABBCC duple minors.
If you’ve got anything I’d be much obliged.
