You are in control here.. Just tell the band NOT to play the tune.. That all said, there are SO many ways Beaumont Rag is played. Not all of them are 32 bars long. and it is often played as a "show off' tune at Bluegrass festivals, i.e. REALLY FAST!!! the tune is pretty much fun if played AABB at a reasonable tempo.. Need help fitting to a tune

A confrontational compromise to decline to pair a dance with the tune would be to suggest the band play it at the break for a couples dance.

Tempus Fugit

I'm trying to understand exactly what you want. Some "beats" look to be longer than others in your outline. In the following abc-notation style text score, "|" indicates a measure boundry, "s" indicates hand shaking and "x" indicates other notes/actions. Each note is followed by a length - 1=quarter note, 2=half note, 4=whole note. Were you thinking of something like this: s1 s1 s2 | s1 s1 s2 | x4 | x4 | x1 x1 x1 x1 | Contra tunes are typically written in 2/2 time - two beats per measure. In the first measure above, "s1 s1" consumes one beat, and "s2" is the second beat. What's the rest of the dance? Hi Linda, I'm not understanding, really, the 8 beats of shaking hands thing cuz, as I read it, just about any danceable tune in 4/4 or 2/4 would do the trick. The Weaving Way

teaching Naked in California

Hi everyoneThis is kind of a newbie question. I've never called Naked In California [Nils Fredland] before and I'm thinking about how to teach it. I think I've mostly figured it out, but I welcome your comments on my thoughts below:(1) I would like for everyone to identify their shadows straight away. I think the best way is to have everyone take hands in long lines then "If you are on the end and your left hand is free, your shadow is the person in your right hand (introduce yourselves). Everyone else, your shadow is the person across and two to the left of you". Is there a better way? (2) After the partner allemande, if the dancers on the ends have no one in the right hand, it seems to me that they have to stay put (there is no wrap around etc.). Is that correct?(3) It looks like people out on the ends need to swap in the usual way.Thanks for any help you can provide.Ted
