My Q is: are there dances, created for just such
situations (3-4
dancers)?
If you have 5 dancers, consider Polka Dot:

See also
http://www.strathspey.org/list/strathspey/archive/msg/43496/
which says, in part,
I have an email from Tom Senior from 1999 on Polka Dot, Double Dot and
Tantalus Jig, all three of them 5 person dances with the same starting
arrangement and very similar figures.
------
With 4 dancers you can hash call all the 8-beat calls and call
combinations that appear in contra dances and squares. Ladies Chain,
Right & Left Thru, Dosado, arm turns, Heys, stars, circles, Pass Thru
to a Wavy Line, Balance, Square Thru with balances on hands 2 & 4,
Roll Away Box The Gnat. Use your imagination. Perhaps teach or make
up a new cal; if you need it.
------
With 3 dancers things are getting thin. Perhaps teach a line dance?
