i have called this dance many times.
i find that, with this figure, a picture is worth a thousand words. let me try to say
that in words! basically, i point my index fingers straight out and make circles by
moving the fingers down, out, up, and back to start. this quickly makes the point that
they are moving in opposite directions. as long as they don't let go of their
neighbor, they can't hardly screw up.
it's a fun dance!

Walter, since it's a gate, they are holding onto the original neighbors, and the
statement that the actives are moving forward simply tells the pair who is moving forward
and who backing up as they whirl around. It's like a butterfly whirl but only holding
hands, not arms about the waist. It is a move more common in English Country Dance, but it
is a fun swoopy way to get the actives swooped into the lines down the hall. Great dance.

Looks like fun.
When actives move forward, does that mean they go between the new neighbor, or stay with
the old neighbor? I.e., is it double progression?
Thanks,
Walter

Does anybody know the name and author of this dance?
Improper
A1 Long lines go forward and back.
Gate once and a quarter with the actives moving forward.
(The caller I learned this from probably used the term cast off).
A2 Line of four down the hall, turn alone...........
B1 Circle left three-quarters and swing partner
B2 Circle left three-quarters and swing neighbor.
Thanks for your help.
