At least here taking hands 4 might be the wrong thing to do. Sometimes
the caller will ask dancers to take hands 6, or even 8, for example,
and also sometimes couples will need to cross over, and some times
not. So, it's usually easier to just talk with partners and neighbors,
while waiting for the lines to assemble and for the caller to let them
know what he, or she, plans to do.
At most dances here dancers usually expect at least 1 and sometimes 3
or 4 dances that are not duple, improper, but instead triple, proper,
becket, 4 face 4, square, grid square,, circle, or even a triplet
(Ted's or otherwise). Dances that are not done in lines will be
announced at the end of the previous dance, but there are still a few
alternatives even in lines.
(When you announce that the next dance will be Ted's #7, or #16, or
#x... do you get a cheer?)
