Yeah....Al's Safeway is one of those dances with a bit that will
sneak up on your if you're not paying attention to the level of the
crowd. In my experience a star to star transition (or even worse,
circle to circle) can be very difficult for new folks, because they
have to quckly change focus and find new neighbors and do something
wtih them. I hadn't really consciously thought about them as
comparable transitions, but the movements really are similar. With
the stars, you just have the added benefit of the physical
connection. One of the things I love about the circle to circle
transition is the sudden switch from one circle to the other "without
a net". You just turn aorund and keep moving and suddenly you're in
a new circle.
Incidentally, Al's Safeway was written by one of our local callers
down here, Robert Cromartie. Even though he's local, we don't get
him very often because he travels so much for his day job. Al's
Safeway is a favorite of mine. After the Flu is by Dean Snipes, a
caller from Charlotte, NC.
If any of you are in the DC area, I will be calling at Glen Echo for
the Sunday family dance and the Sunday evening contra dance. I'd
love to meet some folks -- be sure to come up and introduce yourself.

Hi Jack,
Thanks, the transition in After the Flu looks very nice. It
is the circle equivalent to the star transition in
You're Among Friends by Bob Isaacs. So I'm assuming the turn alone
in B2 is clockwise. I tried Al's Safeway Produce at my dance (all
beginners) yesterday - I mis judged the difficulty of the
transition, it completely fell apart.
Cheers, Bill
