I have called/danced Fairport Harbor a number of times, and find it to
be an enjoyable dance. The change in neighbor in the middle of the
dance is a very nice surprise. It also means that the couples out at
the ends must join in for the whole set promenade; if they don't they
find themselves out of the dance. The interruption in the whole set
promenade is also a move that long time dancers may enjoy more than
the promenade done in Boston Harbor.
Since Boston Harbor is Improper, and the whole set promenade is with
the same neighbor, if the end couples do not join in the promenade,
there basically is no difficulty that is caused; but it is nicer if
they join in!
So my reasons for choosing one or the other would include: Do I wish
to have a Becket formation in the program? Is the dance crowd a bit
more experienced (although newer dancers can do Fairport very
easily!)? Do I want to include a dance with an unexpected move? Have I
done a lot of dances with gent's allemande, and now I want to change
it up by having the women doing an allemande?
Hope this helps, Linda

love Fairport
Harbor. From either a calling or dancing point of view, what would
make you choose one of these two dances over the other? What about
end effects? Seems like with both of them, as long as you get
_everyone_ into the big promenade circle it would work ok.
