I called a private party a couple months back, all vaxxed, capped number,
and masks.
I wore a double-thick cloth mask with a medical grade filter in the mask's
pocket. I found zero problems with a standard mic outside my mask. I did
hover a little closer than I would've without a mask (maybe an inch rather
than 2 to 3 inches). The mask had the bonus of smoothing out my Ps and Ts.
We sound checked with the mask, and I only needed to lift it to sip water.
I love these masks because of the adjustable fit, wide coverage, and
extra-firm and extra-wide nose-wiring. (And recommend with the option to
add a bead, which makes securing it and removing fast)

Dale, let us know how it works out. I may be
calling a dance next
month and even when things start to get better I think we'll probably be
wearing masks for a while. Hopefully not forever. I also plan to get some
foam mic covers that I can put on the mic when I'm calling and then remove
to reduce the chance of spreading anything via the mic.

I sing and play music wearing a mask -- often in

I just ordered one of these to see if it works as advertised:

Yes, using standard KN95 masks. It is even more important to use
good mic
technique in this case. You'll likely need to manage the sound
system EQ for your channel well to ensure best articulation and avoid
muddiness. I remember Steve Z-A managed to get a headset mic *under* a
(cloth, IIRC) mask at one point. I don't recall it being a significant
improvement, because it accentuated the proximity effect by being within
such a tight space and was a bit fussy to manage.
If not strictly required, you may want to consider specifically
exempting the
caller from the mask requirement while on mic. If distanced
and the venue has good ventilation, etc. the risk from one individual
speaking is relatively low and the improvement in sound is significant
to the event's success. This is a judgment call on degrees of risk but if
one has concluded that getting together for this purpose is advisable then
you may as well ensure folks are able to hear the caller as well as the
music to best enjoy it.
Good luck!

Have you called dances while wearing a mask? If so, I’m
interested in your
experience and if you can suggest a particular mask.
Thanks!
