Hi All:
One aspect of new dancer sessions that developing callers tend to overlook are second
timers. Many new dancers will arrive late for their first dance, and then only become
aware there is a lesson meant for them. So they come back with a purpose, whether it is
to review what they've learned or figure out what the heck the hey is. Chances are
what they know has been learned from regular dancers, where the level of instruction can
vary widely. For those first lesson/second timers it's vitally important to cover the
basics of giving weight/eye contact/correct allemandes/etc. before they develop ingrained
bad habits.
So when you start a lesson, it's always good to ask who's there for the first
time, and welcome them. But it's just as important to ask who's there for the
second time, welcome them back, and then ask them if it's their first lesson. In my
experience, much of the time it is.

Always carry a set of easy fun dances. I have 20-30 such dances, which I always bring
in case of such emergencies.
A personal email to me will get you my list.

Subject: [Callers] When beginners arrive late (Was: Glen Echo FND beginner lesson plan)
In the discussion about lessons for beginners, a few people correctly said
that it is often the case that a bus load of beginners will arrive, not a
half hour before the dance begins, but instead an hour after the dance has
started.
It has been my impression that most of the best callers can handle this
situation well. They bring the new dancers into the dance, and everyone
still has fun doing it. Although the skills of the caller are important,
the dance community must also help.
How do you, as a caller, handle this, and what does the dance community
(the experienced dancers) need to do to make it work?
