Hi Bev-
A few years ago, I came up with a midnight solution that seems
to satisfy the sentimental dancers as well as those who
want to mark the time without emphasizing the 'special midnight partner'
symbolism.
At about 11:52, I tell the dancers that we are going to have the
midnight
song, mixer and waltz. If they have a special partner they should get
together now, but I stress that this really is for everyone. I get
them in formation
for a mixer (this usually means three circles at the Scout House) and
explain
that we are going to count down to midnight, sing Aul Lang Syne
(with choreographed swaying in concentric circles), do a no walk-
through mixer
(Lucky 7), and then go right into the waltz (I get them back to their
original partner).
This takes coordination with the band, as they have to agree on the key
for Auld Lang Syne, then have the mixer music lined up so we can launch
right into it, as well as the waltz.
Some dancers sit out the waltz, but everyone joins for Auld Lang Syne
and
the mixer. It's satisfying that folks can celebrate the community
aspect of the evening,
while those dancers who do want to have that midnight waltz can do so.
