When I'm in the band and I've lost count, I like to hear from the caller,
about the time you'd be calling the next move "B 1 coming up". Then, on the
next beat, I can start playing it right then.
If I haven't been too involved in picking the next tune or catching up with
fellow band members and have been watching the walkthrough as I should have
been, I myself can then figure out how far the band is off and can tell us
(or, on some occasions, the caller) where we are.
Another key thing is to signal the "3 more times" or "2 more times" or
"1
more time" in the B2. If you tell us in the B1, we'll forget by the time
the tune is over. And if you tell us 2 more in the A1 (quel horreurs!) we
will not know if you mean "This one and one more," or "Two more after this
one." So PLEASE don't tell us how many more times when we're playing the
A1, even if that is when you just remembered you had to tell us! (It's
okay to tell us "Last Time" then, but make it loud and clear.)
And the secret is: when you've got everyone dancing, and no one is out at
the top, tell us 2 more during the B2. Then the next one will be with one
couple out, and the one after that, everyone's back in again. If you screw
up, we may be kind and play an extra time through so everyone is dancing at
the end and you'll think you did it right, or we'll be mean (or oblivious)
and do what you told us to do.
