Is there an appropriate tempo for MWSD? I used to set all my records at 128 BPM but know
I'm closer to 120-122 with the aging MWSD population. Some songs "sound"
fast at 120 and some songs sound slow at 128. This sound sometimes confuses dancers.
The contra dances that I attend seem much faster, but perhaps it is because there is so
(too) much swinging for an old out of shape guy like me. I will have to check the tempo
next time I attend.
I have noticed on MWSD releases that the producer sometimes has a fast tempo, presumably
to make the release more marketable. Many of these singing calls loose their punch when
slowed to a reasonable dance tempo.

I know this is an old thread, but I ran across it while searching for
something else..
In some cases where a dance has an unusual combination of moves I
suggest that they start off a little slow then kick it up a notch
after a few repetitions.
I haven't given numeric requests, but just assumed "fast" or
"slow"
with respect to a norm around 115-120. Perhaps I should.

Callers,
What is your experience working with bands to establish an appropriate
tempo? Do bands ever ask you what tempo you want? Do you ever request a
particular tempo to fit a dance? Do you communicate tempo requirements
numerically (beats per minute) or maybe by tapping your feet? When are
slower tempos appropriate and when are faster ones appropriate? What do
you consider to be the range in beats per minute that is appropriate for
contra? Some preliminary research told me that a range of 112-120 beats
per minute is appropriate. Do you agree?
