My feeling is a lot of the lead function is not needed
in contra.
The caller and choreography eliminate the need for a leader
who decides what and when things will happen and then the
role of follower also becomes meaningless.
You don't *need* to dance in a lead/follow way, but contra dance is
full of optional extras that are a lot of fun:
- clogging
- giving weight
- eye contact
- clapping
- talking to people
- cheering
I love that contra dance has a structure that the caller teaches.
This makes it one of the most accepting and approachable social
dances. But I also love dancing with people who will lead interesting
variations, as well as leading such variations for others.
