Interesting, John - I tried to come up with a similar measure (and thanks
for this lovely, simple one!) but it seemed that the width of the space made
a big difference.
Say you have 20 feet across. Okay. Two contra lines, but one English one.
Say you have 40 feet across. Okay, four tight contra lines, three pretty
tight English lines.
Say you have 16 feet across. One English line, or One contra line and about
6 feet "wasted". NOT two contra lines.
Wouldn't it follow that sometimes some of the 1.5 square yards will have to
be wasted if the width isn't a multiple of 10 (for contra) or 15 (for
English)?
That is how I came up with width of the hall as the measure which determines
the number of lines, and length of the hall in feet divided by 4 as the
measure of number of couples in the line.
