Here's our fee schedule in St Louis (whew!)
*Summary* - This is the short version
- 38 Sunday night contra dances a year at $5 - attendance 60-80 people
usually
- 24 Saturday night contra dances at $7 - attendance 50-80 people usually
- 12 Waltz parties and 5 Balls at $10 - attendance 40 for the Waltz
Parties, 30-40 for the English Balls and 90 for the New Year's Eve Party
- Bands get paid anywhere from $100 to $300 plus travel
- Bands are most often paid around $200.
- English callers are rarely paid.
- Contra callers are paid if they call more than four dances in an
evening. Then they get (or share) either $45 or $60.
*Details -* This is the long version
- Regular Sunday night Contra dances (3-4 per month) - $5 - (The Big
Bargain!) - Band gets $200, caller $45 (plus $15 for beginner session)
- Saturday Night Contra dances (1 per month) - $7 - Band gets $250,
caller $60 (plus $15 for beginner session)
- Saturday Night Callers Choice Dance (1 per month) - $7 - Band gets
$50/person, open calling, no one is paid.
- Friday English Workshop (1 per month) - $5 - Recorded music, open
calling, no one is paid.
- Friday regular English dance (1 per month) - $8 - Band gets $50/person,
callers sometimes paid, sometimes not (this dance loses money)
- Sunday night Waltz Party (1 per month) - $10 - Band gets $50/person,
Workshop leader gets $25
- English Balls (4 per year) - $10 - Band gets $50/person, caller $30
- New Years Eve Contra Dance Ball -$10 - Band gets $300, open calling, no
one is paid.
For bands and callers from out of town, we add a $25 travel fee to the
driver.
In the summer, when we have generally fewer dancers, the "per person" nights
often have smaller bands.
Our hall costs us $125, plus the bargain rate insurance coverage we get from
CDSS.
We pay our sound guys $25. We have our own sound system(s) but some of the
sound guys bring their own equipment if they prefer it. We lend out our
sound system to sister organizations and rent it occasionally to more
commercial enterprises.

several different programs, but each program has a fixed pay plan. We do
add a bit to cover costs of travel for visiting artists. It is not at all
tied to the receipts for that night. We don't feel it is fair to penalize
bands or callers because of attendance situations that are beyond their
control.
We make up any losses from grants, fund raising events and some donations.

Hi,
I know that "it varies" and probably quite widely, but I'm trying to
get an idea of what is typically charged for one-time or semi-regular dance
calling (not the high end festivals and balls and camps) or how receipts are
divided between caller, band, and house. My interest is as caller, band, and
dance organizer so all input would be appreciated. You can reply off-list to
