small-set bouncy/skippy one-night-stand dances, but I didn't even think about

they'd read like contra-dancing
Well, I've only done this with experienced dance friends, and it might be
counter-productive with newer dancers, but many improper contras *can* be danced by just
two couples, as long as you're willing to switch partners each time through and rotate
the axis of the dance 90 degrees each time through. (E.g. if a dance begins Balance &
Swing Your Neighbor, and ends with Pass Through to a New Neighbor, just turn to your
partner after the first time through the dance and treat them as your new neighbor. Repeat
ad libitum.)
