Before each dance, often DAYS before, Ted would give the band a list of dances he was
going to call along with suggested tunes.. I'm sure copies of these notes went into
his archives. I actually never saw him taking notes during the dance, maybe at the break,
but I was pretty much in awe of the guy and maybe I just missed it. After a dance got
going, he would often turn around and talk to me, or start looking at the "next
dance" he was going to call.. BUT, if something started to mess up out on the dance
floor, he was ALWAYS right there to take care of it.. I don't know how he did that,
some sort of ESP.. he didn't like banjos though.. too bad.. heh heh..

Subject: [Callers] Memorizing Dances
Bill Olson states:
I consider Ted Sannella to be one of my primary mentors and back in
the early days I did sound and often played in the band for his 4th
Friday dance in North Whitefield, ME, so I got to see him close up..
Ted ALWAYS used cards but I KNEW he new the dances he called from
memory. I asked him about it once and he said it just made him feel
safer up there..
Another motivation for Ted may have been the fact that he kept
meticulous notes ----the date, place, and the dances that he called.
His extensive collection of personal notes, as well as books, and many
other items were donated to the Special Collections archives at the
University of New Hampshire. Here is the link to the information about
Ted:
