Your concerns about positional calling are correct.
It works ok for the majority of dances, but poorly for some.
Positional teaching/prompting requires more words from the caller and more thought by
dancers.
Thus some dances will require a crowd of a collectively higher skill level for the dance
to be called positionally.
Often the challenge is not in teaching the dance positionally, but in prompting once the
dance starts.
