My experience when I first started dancing contras,
and mostly even today (coming up on 20 years), is that contra dance sound systems usually
have the caller sound muffled, fuzzy, too much bass, and as a result hard to understand.
The first dance I ever did the sound for, the guy they hired dropped
the gear off but had another job that overlapped ours. The first
caller was a woman with a fairly high pitched voice but on sound check
there was a lot of booming base. Lucky the mixer was a nice digital
one and I could just dial in a high pass filter on her mic input. She
sounded pretty good after that. There are advantages to allowing time
to tune the system before the dance starts.
