Subject: [External] [Callers] Feeling Superstitious 🌕
Hello all!
I'm calling a delightful small-town dance here in Melrose, Florida this Friday...which is Friday the 13th, and also a full moon.
I love using theme opportunities to collect new dances! Anyone have any ideas?
Off the top of my head, I'll probably need to look into Mirror Mirror (Jim Kitch, I believe) and Cats and More Cats (Melanie Axel-Lute). I wonder if I could convince the band to play Stevie Wonder? 😉
Thanks!
Angela

Does anyone have any recommendations, for silly fun called/led
dances/figures/games for a family dance that has lots of young kids and
perhaps not enough adults joining in the mix?
Thanks,
T-Claw
Hi T Claw and all,
Silly Threesomes has been mentioned by others. The video below
is a simpler version which is particularly suited to an excess of young kids.
Instructions in video description.

Capture/Silly Threesomes
Groups of 3 instead of couples, circle mixer
Promenade in groups of 3 counterclockwise
Middle person allemande right the person on the right
Same middle person allemande left the person on the left
Middle person do-si-do person on the right
Outsides make an arch
Middles turn around and walk single file clockwise through the arches until
caller says "capture!"
Basket swing with these 3 and put someone new in the middle
(Lone people or twos who didn't capture anyone wave to find each other -
caller wait for matches before starting over)
You can find a video by googling silly threesome.

I received a request for a caller for an event and I am unable to do it.John Tutweiler and his son are fine people and are active in the Charlotte Folk Society. Nick has played for several Charlotte contradances. If you can help, please contact John directly at john.tutweiler(a)gmail.com
"Nick and a trio are playing at a Civil War Event on Sept 21 at Bost Grist Mill and there is a camp dance that night from like 7-10. The caller they have used before is unavailable so I was reaching out to see if you have an interest or know of someone who I could contact? There dances are a bit different from the contra, think Virginia Reel and that sort of thing. Let me know. There would be pay involved. I think $75...maybe a bit more in a pinch. "
Thanks for considering this.Gretchen CaldwellCharlotte NC
As it happens, I'm calling a regular contra evening in a few weeks and I'm
going to experiment, right off the top of the beginner session, by playing
a tune (i.e. start music, then say "welcome")
https://youtu.be/O0AW6MQXX0Y
(Don't worry, the 3/4 quickly changes to jigs. I've listened to many tunes
to accompany this idea - Pop, Motown, Celtic - and this tune seems to
provide the musicality and the clear phrasing useful for this exercise, and
continuity with what they'll hear while dancing later.)
have the dancers listen for phrasing and then (repeating) in a big circle
holding hands:
L/R 8
F/B 8
L4/R12
F2/B2/R4
L OR R 6/2 the other way.
i.e. introduce them to a few ways of slicing up a musical phrase in ways
they will encounter with contra figures.
Finish off with a maze of F/B/L/R 8 OR 16
My contention/hope/observation is that I have never seen an intro session
that actually introduces new dancers to the music and, therefore, they have
no connection between music and figures when the band actually starts
playing later. My hope is that, by first laying a musical foundation, the
newbies will try to sync the movements they learn to the music they heard
first.
We'll see.
this idea might work for your situation.
