Hello everyone,
Thank you for your patience while I work out the bugs!
The sharedweight mailing lists are now hosted on Mailman version 3. You can see the archives here:
https://lists.sharedweight.net/hyperkitty/
The (super) old archives are also available at the old URLs and I am going to put a message at the top of them that redirects visitors to the new archives. The mail-archive.com archives will continue to work.
Let me know if you see or experience anything odd.
Seth
Hi everyone,
I need to make one (hopefully) final change to the server. The mailing lists will be down for a few hours, starting now. I’ll send an email all about the new set up once I’m finished.
Thanks for your patience,
Seth
Hi Shared Weight callers,
As part of the Shared Weight renewal that happening this fall, we are renaming the callers list. Instead of callers(a)lists.sharedweight.net it will be contracallers(a)lists.sharedweight.net. The change is due to the fact that Shared Weight will now be hosting three separate lists for callers and so we want to have a bit more definition in the names. (The other two lists exist but are now becoming part of Shared Weight.)
Here is a bit of information about the other two caller lists:
---> Alan Winston's English country dance list focuses primarily on conversations for ECD callers although musicians and organizers do chime in.
---> Ridge Kennedy's Trad callers list is will be serving callers interested in community dances, dancing for children, one-night stands, traditional squares, and other forms outside of the contra and ECD realm.
Of course, there's always going to be a bit of overlap between lists so feel free to raise the odd non-contra question on contracallers.
Note: Callers(a)sharedweight.net will forward to contracallers(a)sharedweight.net so if you happen to forget and send to the old address, your post will go through with no problem.
Thanks!
Seth
Thanks to everyone for the corrections - I excell at miswriting.
I have never called this since I collected it - I need to do that soon

Thanks all! Wasn't sure if the Star hand was miswritten in Mac's, or if it was one of those reach-backs with the other hand, as sometimes seen...I think the latter is a proper square dance figure. I suspected the former! Thanks for checking that, y'all.

In this video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbLja2-Qu7c
of "Northeast on Southwest" as danced at the 2012 Dance Flurry, with Susan Petrick calling, the A1 part is danced (starting from Becket formation) as
Circle L 3/4
Pass through along
New neighbor swing
so I'd presume that's the way she wrote it. Of course it's possible that she has changed her preference since then. It's also possible that she originally had dancers find new neighbors by sliding left (or by looking on the left diagonal) and changed her preference _before_ calling it at the 2012 Flurry. Or maybe she varies the A1 according to which A1s occur in other dances in here program for a particular event. Or <insert random speculation here>. But absent further information from Susan herself or from people who have seen/heard her all the dance more recently, I'm inclined to assume that the "official" version of the A1 is as given above.
In these two videos with Will Mentor calling
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IE9uG3ev3Hshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZ_inj42ZDQ
dancers progress to new neighbors by sliding left before the circle instead of by passing through along the set after the circle. The title line for the latter has "by" instead of "on" in the name of the dance, but in the video itself you can hear Will announcing the dance as "Northeast on Southwest."

Correction — I misstated it earlier, sorry:
* adjust from the star to a handshake with your neighbor for a right-hand
balance and box the gnat, *then *right-left through...
Anyway, have fun with it!

It's actually a Right-hand star. Adjust your handgrip from the star to a
right hand shake with your Neighbor so you can pull by for the right-left
through.
You can see Susan calling it herself at the Flurry here:

Such a fun dance!

I picked up the title for this dance from Lisa Greenleaf about a month ago,
but am not finding the dance anywhere online. Does anyone have the author
and the choreo for the dance Northeast by Southwest?
Thanks!
Angela
It means from the star right 3/4, which ends across from your neighbor, you
take right hands with your neighbor for the right hand balance; you "keep"
that hand because it's already in the star.
Ah, I see the problem - it's in Mac's notes as a star left, but it's
actually a star right.
