Hi organizers.
The Rochester NY Contra Dancers FB page is getting a few join requests per week from
people in other countries, from accounts that have very recently been created and have
only a very few, if any, friends or other groups joined.
We are leery of trolls who intend to disrupt the group, and have been rejecting them.
I was wondering if other group pages are receiving similar requests, and what they have
done about it.

We have had the same thing happen for a number of years.
We approved the first few and they quickly posted about selling shoes etc.
Therefore, we now reject such requests.

I've seen that sort of thing on the Chicago group's page. I tend not to
approve a request if the person has no other friends in the group, or if
the profile looks "off" - very few friends, no photos, from a place far
away from Chicago (why would you be interested in our dance?)

I do the same as the Chicago group on the local sites. I look for friends, and notice the
few bits of information that is available. I am hesitant to approve out of towners unless
I personally know them to be traveling dancers.

My group is small enough that I can add only people I recognize. But for
a larger group, I wonder if you could get Facebook to do a lot of the
gatekeeping for you -- there is some sort of option where people applying
to join the group have to answer questions, and you could ask how long have
you been dancing contra/ECD? and what group(s) do you usually dance with?
I suspect that bots and trolls would usually not be able to answer such
questions convincingly.

I have been using the same criteria as Meg - do they live in the area? Do they have many
mutual friends as me? One challenge is that maybe they tried the dance for the first
time and now want to join the group to get more info - then they wouldn't have any
mutual friends, and I believe there have been a few of these instances.

Hi,
I run the PVCD (Pioneer Valley Contra Dance) listserv. I have it set up so I have to
approve the first post of any new member. If they are legit I approve message then they
can post whenever they want. If not legit I then ban them.
I think you can do the same on FaceBook but not sure how.

You can also put them on Post Approval. I think that lasts for 30 days, at which time
it goes away, but can be renewed if necessary.
We also get some requests from unexpected places. I usually look at them and make a
decision (probably very subjective and arbitrary) as to whether this appears to be a real
person or a bot. Real people can also post unwanted content, but it seems to be less of a
problem. If the entity requesting to join is in a whole bunch of groups and has few, if
any, friends, then it is probably a bot and I tend to reject them. Others can be more
difficult to be sure about. So I usually approve them, but put them on Post Approval. If
the 30 days goes by without any problems then they are probably OK.
Just because someone is from another country doesn't necessarily mean they
aren't legitimate. We have one person on our Central Illinois English Country
Dancers' email list who is from Korea. There is no dancing in her area, but she likes
the Jane Austen books and is interested in the dancing. I don't know if she is
getting any benefit from being on our list, I have suggested some others that might be
more useful, but she is certainly welcome to be a part of our group, even though very
remotely.

So true about location not necessarily being the factor to accept/reject
someone.
Often you can tell by what other groups the person belongs to (check those
out) and other aspects of their profile.
I know that many of the groups that I've recently joined have questions to
answer before getting approved to join the group. That could be an option
as well.

We have 3 admins and I can only speak to my (and original as set) policy
and that is to study each request's profile before granting acceptance
(hate to use THAT word in Contra context, but...). I look for when they
joined FB. If they are connected to another member or other contra
community, and what in general they are posting. Do not misunderstand
that...I am looking at are they all about; hosting a website, or marketing
a product...not their political or religious beliefs. In the past we have
had regulars who wanted to sell purses and other items through our group
page. I too am concerned as to why the sweet girl from Thailand (or
wherever) wants to join our group when there is no obvious connection.

Thursday Night Dance at Scout House in Concord MA does not accept such
requests. Your list of disqualifiers is pretty much what we use. We
also look at number of "Friends". When that number gets up into the
thousands, that is a fair indicator it's a marketing effort.

Hmmm, I don’t know FB well enough to know the answer to this, but is it not possible for
someone to follow without “joining” which I assume means being able to post, or to offer
posts that are filtered until trusted? I know Google Groups can do this.
FB is such a cluster.

Hi Bob, and all
I maintain a few Facebook groups and it's something I deal with frequently. As Emily
and Alan suggested, I would set up your group so that people have to answer three
questions before they are approved. It's definitely more of a captcha-type,
prove-you're-not-a-bot exercise, but it's good. If they don't answer the
questions, I usually don't let them in. Even when folks do answer the questions,
I'll still check their profile to make sure they have a certain number of friends
(mutual friends are even better), and a good number of "real" posts with
comments on them, to see if they're real people (so not just cover photo and profile
photo). Even then I'm a little suspicious if it's not someone local. It's so
frustrating that we have to be so diligent about this stuff, but we have to be careful.
Even people who are "legitimate," "real" people can be problematic
sometimes (I had that issue with one of my groups recently).
In terms of having friends, I don't agree that more than 1,000 means they're
selling something. I have more than 1,000 friends because i've lived in different
places and do different kinds of activities (ie: dancing, writing, cruising etc). Having
lots of friends doesn't necessarily mean they'll bombard your group with junk.
When you go to your Facebook group, look under the ...More dropdown and go to Edit
Settings. There should be an option to add questions there.
