Greetings from Rochester NY!
We are taking this down-time to work on our website; CDRochester.org.
It uses Wordpress, and we recently turned on the AOI-SEO (All-in-one Search-Engine-Optimization) options.
So, now we have to put in terms that will increase our presence in search results for potential new ECD and contradancers.
I am soliciting from the hive mind, ideas for these terms. So far we've come up with the groupings below. The idea is to anticipate what people will type into a search engine when they looking for activities similar to ours.
We'd appreciate hearing about terms you've used successfully, or thoughts you have about what else might be good terms.
We also welcome any experiences, good or bad, related to SEO in general or the Wordpress AOI-SEO in particular, that you wish to share. Instruments the performers play are already listed in performer specific AOI-SEO fields.

Hi all,
We in Philadelphia are using our Covid time to try to get some policies
done.
One thing that has come up is a photography/video policy. Some dancers do
not want to appear in any photos or videos.
Some ideas we tossed about that have practical drawbacks:
-designate one line as always non-photo/video
-buttons or badges for those who do not want to be on camera
Is this something your dance has grappled with? Anything you've come up
with that you're willing to share?
Thanks in advance,

Hi
On January 14 David Millstone made a remarkable presentation at the Mt Airy (Philadelphia) Virtual Speaker Series titled:
“Country Dance in Modern Times: Squares, ECD and Contras in Post-WWII America”
Nearly 150 of you were there! If you missed the live presentation (or want to review it over and over) you can find the archive here:
https://thursdaycontra.com/virtualDance/david-millstone-01-14-2021.html
Scroll to the bottom of the page for the FB link.
We have the do a minor edit on the zoom recording and that should be on the same page in a week or so.
Stay safe out there!Cheers

Hi fellow organizers,
I hope folks are doing fairly well. These are certainly interesting times.
Given that some of you attend the annual organizer discussion at the Dance
Flurry, I wanted to check in about the focus of this year's session.
I've drafted a description for the session (see below). Do you have any
thoughts? I feel as though February might be good time to start talking
about how to restart our dance events, even if we don't know when. (The
vaccine rollout is giving me a tentative hopeful feeling that gatherings
might start in within the next year.)
Any advice/thoughts are welcome including alternative topics. The only
topic I'm wary of tackling are those that relate to when dances should open
as I'm not a health expert and we won't be bringing in health experts to be
part of the discussion.
Thanks,
Emily
*Organizers Unite - Talking about the HOW of restarting our events!*
*Join our annual Flurry organizers discussion for a unique focus this
year... talking about the HOW of restarting our events. Share your
thoughts and ideas about how your community plans to restart dancing,
re-engage long standing dancers, and attract new participants.*
*(We won't focus much on the WHEN of reopening as those decisions depend
highlighly on the pandemic and professional health advice.)*
Greetings!I believe this is a must see presentation organized by the Mt Airy (Philadelphia) Contra group. I hope you're able to join us either on z**m or FB. Please read below.
David Millstone presents: Country Dance in Modern Times: Squares, ECD and Contras in Post-WWII America
Thursday, Jan. 14, 2021 •, 8:00 PM Eastern - 9:00 PM Eastern
Contact https://thursdaycontra.com/virtualDance.html
We know that English country dancing has changed from the time of John Playford 1651 English Dancing Master. Similarly, today's contra dancer enjoys a different experience from that of the early 1800s. But we don't have to look so far in the past to see significant differences in contras, squares, and ECD.
In this presentation, David Millstone will explore the dramatic changes that have taken place in different forms of country dancing in the years since World War II, with a special focus on contras. He'll augment his talk with photos, audio files, and video clips to highlight key developments and to help us all appreciate how today's dances evolved.
Speaker BioDavid Millstone, Lebanon, NH, discovered contra dances in the early 1970s; he has been a caller for more than 40 years—contras, squares, English country dance, and family-friendly events. He has appeared at venues across North America and in eight European countries. He is past President of the Country Dance and Song Society, and co-ordinates the Square Dance History Project. David is co-author of Cracking Chestnuts, a book about classic American contra dances; he wrote the contra dance history chapter of Dance a While; he created video documentaries about Bob McQuillen, Dudley Laufman, and Ralph Sweet; and he has presented numerous talks on dance history at weekends and dance camps._________________________________________

Dear Alan,
Thanks so much for all that you share and do for those who you’ve chosen as you extended family.
I’ve been a subscriber and reader, without commenting a single time to posts, for many years now.
Though I’ve saved most of those posts that have come my way, like the text below, the formatting of the notes shared always includes much that reads as "computer speak” related to formatting.
Do you know if there is a program that I may run these shared weight posts through that will strip out the extraneous background formatting text before I save them?
I do it all by hand and it’s frequently a long, engaging process.
I hope this finds you well. I will look forward to visit again sooner than later I hope.
Again, I appreciated all that you shared within our community last Tuesday! Thanks so much.
Best regards,
Frederick Park

Hi dance organizers,
There's a new Shared Weight list that I wanted to tell you about.... it's
called Growing Up Trad!
Here's our mission:
*Growing up Trad! is an email discussion list for caregiving adults who
love traditional dance, music and song. The focus of our conversation is
around nurturing these traditions within our families and in particular
with the children in our care. *
*We are dancers, singers, callers, musicians, and/or lovers of the
traditions. We are seeking ways to network with others so that our children
can have increased opportunities to engage in our shared traditions,
especially if we are isolated in our local communities and have few kindred
spirits.*
*We welcome parents, grandparents, and anyone else interested in discussing
how to encourage the love of traditional dance, music, and song among
children in their families. We also hope that this online community will
help children and families prepare for connecting in person over time as we
are able to meet locally, regionally, and beyond.*
We'd love to have any of you join us.
More info and how to join is here:
https://www.sharedweight.net/lists/growinguptrad/
Thanks!
Emily Addison
Great list Seth!
Emily, come to our contra concert party on Sun 10/25 at 7pm ET.
I gathered things I like from many dances.
I love Seth’s games and breakout topics. Toronto was playing music before and I wanted our bands to get to play more so I added a 30 min concert before dancing, which is open to a variety of online-friendly dances from country line dance with contra tunes, to bouree turned to face the camera, to dances written for online.
Then I am doing polls, trivia and interviews similar to London Barn Dance. Reviews last time were great and I hope more of our locals will come too.

Hi fellow organizers,
Here in Ottawa, we haven't yet held an online gathering for our dancers.
We had a few distanced visits when the weather was warm and we've also had
some open band practices. However, it would be really nice to have a way
for our dancers to socialize over the winter.
Other than dancing, do you have suggestions for how to create a fun social
event online?
I'm looking for ways to engage a larger group of participants as well as
activities for break out rooms. Are there any fun and easy games for large
groups? Conversation starters?
Thanks for any tips!
Emily Addison

Subject: [External] [Organizers] Looking for ideas on how to make online so=
cial events fun for participants
Hi fellow organizers,
Here in Ottawa, we haven't yet held an online gathering for our dancers. W=
e had a few distanced visits when the weather was warm and we've also had s=
ome open band practices. However, it would be really nice to have a way fo=
r our dancers to socialize over the winter.
Other than dancing, do you have suggestions for how to create a fun social =
event online?
I'm looking for ways to engage a larger group of participants as well as ac=
tivities for break out rooms. Are there any fun and easy games for large gr=
oups? Conversation starters?
Thanks for any tips!
Emily Addison

Hi fellow organizers,
Here in Ottawa, we haven't yet held an online gathering for our dancers.
We had a few distanced visits when the weather was warm and we've also had
some open band practices. However, it would be really nice to have a way
for our dancers to socialize over the winter.
Other than dancing, do you have suggestions for how to create a fun social
event online?
I'm looking for ways to engage a larger group of participants as well as
activities for break out rooms. Are there any fun and easy games for large
groups? Conversation starters?
Thanks for any tips!
