The very same person - but known more in the Scottish dance scene than English or Irish. However he is a dance researcher, interpreter and scholar. He has some authoritative and definitive works published. And he worked with Tom and Joan Flett on promoting traditional (non-RSCDS) Scottish dancing. Chris B.

Hello Folks,
I am relatively new at calling contras and I am looking for some asy to
intermediate contras to introduce the hey to a group that includes many
beginners. and/or club square dancers.
"Butter" by Gene Hubert is my go to dance, but I am looking for a few
more. I like Butter because the flow from ladies chain into a RH hey is
great, and because all the other calls are introduced earlier in most
evening.
I love simple, but different choreography, so I am open to most suggestions.

See https://www.library.unh.edu/find/special/northern-junket
for an index to scanned-in copies of Northern Junket
https://www.library.unh.edu/find/special/northern-junket/editorials
will get you to specific editions (though I'm sure there
is an easier way somewhere)

You might consider
posting this on the Scottish Dance list. Hugh was primarily
a Scottish dancer and there might be someone still around
who has, or knows of the whereabouts of, his publications or
personal files. That assumes that he kept copies of articles
he submitted to publications like Kitchen Junket.

Merry Christmas. Some holiday stuff that I hope may be useful to you.
Christmas Mixer is on my website at http://k-1.us This is a mixer we've
been using for years as part of the Winter Solabration (now in its 30th!
year). The first part of this is similar to Gay Gordons. It is designed
to use a medley of march-like Christmas tunes — Hark the Herald Angels
Sing, Here We Come a-Wassailing, and Joy to the World.
There is a video as well, along with a pdf of the sheet music you can
download. If you also lead English Dance, and need an easy Christmas
dance, you might want to look at I Saw Three Ships.

Re: Stray contras needing identification:
My answer seems to have gotten buried in the response, so just in case,
here's the run-down again:
Were you in Atlanta on Aug. 8, 2014? These all happen to be in the
program I called that night with Steam Shovel.
#1) You Can't Get There from Here by Carol Ormand
#2) Sugar Hill Stomp, by Ron Buchanan
#3) Serenity Knoll Stroll, by Charley Harvey -- see notes below
#4) Dog Leaf Reel, by Lisa Greenleaf. Adaptation of Dog Branch Reel by
Bob Dalsemer
note: #3 is Serenity Knoll Stroll, by Charley Harvey, but as Jerome
transcribed it, it has been tweaked, with the A & B parts
switched.Charley's original version goes like this:
Improper contra (not Becket)
A1) Whole set promenade ccw; turn as a couple and return single, file,
women in the lead.
A2)Women Al. Rt. 1&1/2 (with the woman in front of your partner)
Partner swing
B1) Right Diagonal R&L thru; across the set R&L thru
B2) New women gypsy right 1&1/2
New Neighbor swing.
The version that Jerome transcribed is an adaptation to which I confess
credit or blame. I was calling a Jonesborough event and I wanted to
include this dance to honor David Wiley, since Charley wrote it for the
opening of the fabulous dance pavilion at his idyllic place in
Jonesborough. But it was a little too complex for the crowd, so by
switching the A&B parts, the progression seemed a little easier. Also, I
changed the R&Ls to 1/2 heys because the floor was crowded. Charleys
note for the original says: /This should feel as if the ladies are
taking off with another guy after getting a look at him during the
womens gypsy. She returns alone for the allemande and resolves it in the
Partner swing./I think this original storyline makes for a nice
advanced dance!Apologies to Charley for messing with his dance.
Happy Dancing,

Country Dances from Sussex
Continuing upon the theme of country dances from Sussex - these were written up in one Heathfield gentleman's diary: Sylvan Harmer.
The instructions are brief - likely mere aide-de memoires. No tunes are given. They likely date to post Regency. However bearing in mind that country dancing was one of the Prince Regent's favourite past-times in Brighton, they may well date from that time.

More Sussex dances to come.
