Has anyone had success making an unattractive hall pretty?
We’d love to hear ideas from your dance, or if you just like brainstorming, here are

Please be careful about hanging fabrics. In many jurisdictions they must be flameproofed
using an approved method/chemical. Remember that night club fire several years ago.
Flameproofing might not be something you want to do to someone's quilt unless they are
donating it permanently.

Emily, these are fantastic!
In addition to quilts, old draperies work well and come in a variety of
patterns and materials. Regarding lighting, we often dance in venues with a
lot of "down" lighting; turning off those lights and replacing it with
a few "up" lights will create a better ambiance and highlight the interior
structures of older buildings / barns.

Our decorative scheme is to lay them along the four edges of the room, in
the crease where the wall meets the floor (in the CDNY case I imagine this
as being behind the feet of the folding chairs along the edges). We’re
partial to multi-colored and non-blinking fairy lights. Coats, water
bottles, bags, etc. tucked under the chairs may block some of the lights
but the overall effect remains in tact, in my opinion. We dim the ceiling
lights in the hall.

We do not own the hall and any decorations we put up we’d need to take
down that evening. We dance in it every week, (not just for special
events) and we’d like to do this for our regular dances.
Does any dance have something like that chiffon material that they have
rigged a system to hang up and take down every dance?
I remember the Portland Maine dance used to hang tapestries every time.

exceedingly drab and dreary Middlebury Municipal Gymnasium with quilts.
A committee member designed dis-assemblable display frames, and quilts
by dancers and other local artisans were displayed. They were
transformative of that space, filling it with beauty to complement the
music and dance movements.
I know photos were taken because we sponsored a visit by George Marshall
and Wild Asparagus (Becky Tracy's family home was just up the road, in
Bristol) and the second U.S. dance appearance by the Brunet Brothers (the
first of which we ran in Bristol with Pete Sutherland doing a rare calling
gig.) But where would they be now, over a quarter of a century later?

Note my comments below fall into the tangent of sound versus visuals.
Re using fabric for visual and sound ...
While chiffon fabric would certainly pretty a space up, it shouldn't
alter the sound. We've been looking into this to help behind the band at
the upcoming Chattaboogie weekend. To get more than a simple "this is
what I believe" I tracked the following down on the Internet (so must be
true!!!! :) ...
Sound Absorbing Fabric
Fabric that will absorb sound frequency waves is thick and porous.
The waves enter into the fabric, and some become trapped in the
fibers and folds and convert from sound energy into heat. Sound
energy that makes it through the cloth hits the wall or window 6” to
12” beyond.
It is reflected into the curtain again. Some more noise will be
absorbed. The waves that pass back through the curtain into the room
will be softened and dampened. Echo and reverberation are
controlled, and listening enjoyment is improved.
The best fabric is thick, 32-ounce velour type cloth. Heavy blackout
curtains are good too, especially multi-layered curtains. Some
fabrics have an NRC (noise reduction coefficient), the higher the
value, and the better at decreasing reverberation, reflection, and echo.
Acoustically Transparent Fabrics
Transparent fabrics are used to cover acoustic panels, bass traps,
and diffusers that are made of absorbent insulation. They cover and
contain the fibers of the insulation while permitting soundwaves to
pass through as if they weren’t there. Many fabrics are transparent.
To check if a fabric is transparent, hold it up to your mouth and
blow through it. If the air passes easily through it, it’s
transparent. (...)
Quilts have the thickness to help with sound, which Atlanta uses for
their weekend dances. Cheap version of that are moving blankets.
Official sound absorbing blankets cost more and I (informal thought)
probably not worth the higher price versus doubling up cheap moving
blankets (if necessary).
BTW, St. Louis' Childgrove has plastic water pipes cut/set for hanging
their quilts. The quilts are for both visual and sound improvement (and
space defining). I'm impressed with how they are easily placed where
needed for optimum control (configuration, sound, visuals) of the space.
This isn't something you'd want to do for a simple evening dance.

Yes.
I don’t remember her name, but—good grief! thirty years ago?—one of our Otter Creek Contra
Dance committee members proposed decorating the exceedingly drab and dreary Middlebury
Municipal Gymnasium with quilts.
A committee member designed dis-assemblable display frames, and quilts by dancers and
other local artisans were displayed. They were transformative of that space, filling it
with beauty to complement the music and dance movements.
I know photos were taken because we sponsored a visit by George Marshall and Wild
Asparagus (Becky Tracy's family home was just up the road, in Bristol) and the second
U.S. dance appearance by the Brunet Brothers (the first of which we ran in Bristol with
Pete Sutherland doing a rare calling gig.) But where would they be now, over a quarter of
a century later?

For the Rochester, NY Thanksgiving weekend in our old hall, we got
permission from the landlord to hang quilts from the balcony. We tied 3/4"
metal conduit tubes to the balcony fence and used quilt pins to attach the
quilts to the conduit.
I take Weogo's point about pleating the fabric, but that would hurt the
visuals on the quilts. Quilt owners can be protective of their work, and
may object to that treatment. I'm sure you will listen closely to them.

We used to dim the lights in our hall, but as my eyesight has gotten worse I’ve realized
that’s often not a good idea.

Hi Mac,
The quilts certainly add some color!
From an acoustics standpoint:
Optimally, fabrics are heavily pleated - for instance a 6' quilt on a
3' rod.
Also, installing them a few inches off the wall increases their absorption.
Note that I have seen a Fire Marshall order the removal of fabrics that
don't have a tag saying 'Does not support flamespread' .

The famous solution is to hang quilts. Seen that over and over again.
Possibly camp flags or something like that.
That goodness we love to dance and don’t care too much how it looks as long
as the floor is good! Thinking about dancing at NEFFA… not pretty but great
music and dance friends goes a long way.

In the hall we use for our weekly dances we did put up a string of holiday lights (white -
400 ft string / 1000 lights) for our NYE dance. The owners of the hall saw what we did
and asked us to leave them up permanently. They have yoga classes in there during the
week and they really like them.
I think we paid less than $50 for the lights.

Hi Alex,
Are you looking for long-term solutions or a one-time effort for
something like a New Year's Eve dance?
Do you own the building or have a long-term lease?
How much are you allowed to do in there?
For starters I would try to capitalize on the white of the walls and the
green of the crashpads.
Maybe a lighter shade of the crashpad green?
How are the hall's acoustics - can dance callers be heard intelligibly?
A primary focus on acoustics with pretty as a secondary consideration
might be a useful approach.
