Love this topic!Put a few photos of hall decor that I've collected over the years. :)Full transparency - I've downloaded many of these from FB.Emily_______________________________________________On Sun, Dec 15, 2024 at 1:42 AM Robert Matson via Organizers <organizers@lists.sharedweight.net> wrote:Hi Alex, All,For our situation, a stark space the size of a basketball court, we too have been happy with the results from using fairy lights/Christmas tree lights. They've met our requirements: make a stark space look fun and cozy; inexpensive; low labor requirements: an unskilled, one-person task that’s easy to delegate*; fast set-up, take down and tidy storage*.*My key discovery, which enabled this to work, was to use a cord storage reel: to reel up the light strings at evening’s end without damaging the wires, to neatly store, and to neatly reel out the light strings the next time. With the reels, it became a fast 100-second job to lay down each 100’ string of lights and takes only about double that to reel them back up.The same reels dramatically shorten the time needed to lay down/pick up XLR audio cables and extension cords without damaging the wires. They’d also be useful for storing and reeling out those nice white gossamer fabric bands posted earlier in this thread. Our decorative scheme is to lay them along the four edges of the room, in the crease where the wall meets the floor (in the CDNY case I imagine this as being behind the feet of the folding chairs along the edges). We’re partial to multi-colored and non-blinking fairy lights. Coats, water bottles, bags, etc. tucked under the chairs may block some of the lights but the overall effect remains in tact, in my opinion. We dim the ceiling lights in the hall.I hope this helps you.Rob MatsonOrganizer, Musician, minor callerConway, AR_______________________________________________On Sat, Dec 14, 2024, 10:02 PM Alexandra Deis-Lauby via Organizers <organizers@lists.sharedweight.net> wrote:Thanks all!_______________________________________________We do not own the hall and any decorations we put up we’d need to take down that evening. We dance in it every week, (not just for special events) and we’d like to do this for our regular dances.Does any dance have something like that chiffon material that they have rigged a system to hang up and take down every dance?I remember the Portland Maine dance used to hang tapestries every time.On Dec 14, 2024, at 7:55 PM, Kimbi Hagen <kimbi.hagen@gmail.com> wrote:Our dance has been talking about purchasing white chiffon material to hang in pleated swags across the gym, to do double duty as a sound baffle and mute the standard surface-of-the-sun gym lighting. We also want to thread light weight fairy lights in and amongst the chiffon. Because pretty. We got the idea from our reframed Trolley Barn dance venue, who found them left up one time after the Trolley Barn was used for a wedding.Like this picture from the internet.<image.png>Sent from my "Smart" Phone(so please excuse bizarre and nonsensical Auto-corrects). They were transformative of that space, filling it with beauty to complement the music and dance movements.I know photos were taken because we sponsored a visit by George Marshall and Wild Asparagus (Becky Tracy's family home was just up the road, in Bristol) and the second U.S. dance appearance by the Brunet Brothers (the first of which we ran in Bristol with Pete Sutherland doing a rare calling gig.) But where would they be now, over a quarter of a century later?Love to you all—DonOn Dec 14, 2024, at 3:39 AM, Alexandra Deis-Lauby via Organizers <organizers@lists.sharedweight.net> wrote:_______________________________________________Hi all!Has anyone had success making an unattractive hall pretty? We’d love to hear ideas from your dance, or if you just like brainstorming, here are photos of our hall at CDNY (NYC).Thanks!Alex<PastedGraphic-2.png><PastedGraphic-3.png><PastedGraphic-4.png>
