Hi all,
There’s been a lot of discussion regarding generational transition and one
of the things that has come up over and over is that to engage young
people, especially young women, dances must be able to deal with any
“creeps” who routinely cause discomfort to targeted others.
Beyond a statement of values, which sets the expectation for behavior at a
dance, what actionable policies has your organization successfully (or
unsuccessfully) implemented regarding this issue?
Looking for:
- reporting policy and organizational response to reports.
- communications with those who violate community values, including
warnings.
- addressing continued unacceptable behavior.
- mistakes organizations can make when forming for executing policies.
- anything else relevant to the topic.
Not a fun discussion, but perhaps a helpful one to have.

Hi All,
The attached document was most recently amended in 2019, before the (recent) name change
from Chattahoochee Contra Dancers to the Atlanta Contra Dance.
This procedure is normally reviewed and, as needed, updated on a yearly basis by the
Steering Committee and is now overdue for its first post-pandemic review. (Note to self –
add this as an agenda item for next Steering Committee meeting).
The original version of the procedure was first drafted after we had been threatened with
legal action by a creeper that we banned. (Unfortunately for the creeper, the lawyer he
selected to represent him was also a dancer and, once we took him aside and revealed the
full story, withdrew his agreement to represent the creeper in a suit against us, advised
the creeper not to pursue additional action, and advised our Steering Committee to develop
a formal procedure for disciplinary action/banning and put it in writing, which we
promptly did).
To date we have only needed to use the procedure outlined here to “permanently” ban one
dancer. Permanently is in quotes because, after being banned, that dancer proactively
went to extraordinary measures (including attending anger management classes and getting
therapy) to demonstrate a sincere desire to rehabilitate himself. As a result, we
eventually allowed him to begin attending our dance again and now realize that the next
iteration of the procedure needs to include a process for, and conditions under which we
would, re-visit permanent bans.

I think a policy is great, but I'd also suggest having a behavior/ safety/
dance environment committee.
This group would be briefed on previous issues, and our current
progressive coaching/ warning system, and be first points of contact if a
new dancer (for example) wishes to report something that made them
uncomfortable. They also would be focussed on monitoring our dance,
maybe asking people's opinions, and making improvements, (like our good
etiquette posters.) Back in 2017 we had about 5 pent up behavior issues
that needed dealing with (people would avoid people's lines, etc.) and we
finally got caught up.
One best practice is to COACH and discuss any uncomfortable / unsafe
behavior. Things like suspension and expulsion come with
repeat infractions for people that don't respond to coaching. For
example, we don't want highly enthusiastic male dancers twirling 1st time
dancers like crazy (I have seen this recently) without asking clear
permission/ possibly giving them a tiny demo at the end of the line, etc.
For example, Sri says he would never twirl a dancer he hasn't talked to
about it.
We had to expel one dancer who refused to get consent before doing his wild
moves. We had caused injury and discomfort. We talked a few times and
he said he would not change.
The committee could also make a short list of "Great dancing tips" that
callers can reinforce- like one per night.

I agree with these suggestions and have already thought it would be so
useful to make a concerted effort to ask callers to include safety and safe
style teaching as well as reinforcement of respectful dance practices.
Having some set tips for callers reference is a fantastic suggestion. I've
seen some callers address this very well.
I've noticed that some groups have a separate safety committee, and some
have a steering committee that oversees safety issues. Our group is still
very much rebuilding from pandemic loss and it still feels like we're still
pulling teeth to find individuals willing to make a regular commitment on
an organizational level. That said, I do believe there might be interest in
such an effort, especially amongst some younger dancers.
Policy is definitely in the works from the suggestions made on this list.

Hello all,
I am late to the conversation and still need to catch up, however I'm
planning a major event this weekend so not quite “there” yet.
I have 2 things to mention...
First... I am bothered by the “creepy men” comment. I understand the point
however I feel that we should not be addressing this as a gender thing.
Many people can feel creepy, or clingy, or overbearing, etc. I hope that
some focus can be put on the real definition and not something so vague and
open to interpretation as the “creepy” definition. (Again I understand the
feeling but we are businesses even if only community businesses.)
Second... we do have an organizers meet-up that happens every 2nd Monday of
the month which is THIS MONDAY. This sounds like a great topic to discuss
along with other safety protocols put in place by organizations. For
example, we have two “safety officers,” one male, one female, one is older,
one is younger, so that there is hopefully a person that folks feel safe
speaking to if needed. (We can share more of our protocol at the meeting
this Monday.)

I appreciate and I am interested in Darlene's point about being more
specific about behavior, (more specific than "creepy") and we might think
about a short list of what makes some dancers (or new dancers?)
uncomfortable.
We all want to improve *retention *of new dancers!
I am the kind of dancer that smiles a lot (contra just makes me smile!) and
I enjoy connecting with everyone present.
Contra sometimes makes me a little goofy, or silly. Just a little.
I can be very welcoming, life if a small group of new dancers misses the
Welcome Session, I might grab my wife or someone and give a 5 min mini
lesson in the hallway, and new dancers really appreciate it!
But, maybe one in twenty dancers- I get a weird vibe like they are
uncomfortable with my vibe!
Maybe they think I'm acting too familiar too fast? Or I'm enjoying too
much eye contact?? I don't really know.
But I would not be surprised if 1 in 20 finds me creepy, as I don't fully
understand it. I am an older guy and contra makes me feel very happy and
youthful.
I did ask one local dancer recently after a dance if I was making her
uncomfortable. I said, "Can I ask you a question? No big deal- I'm just
curious. Am I doing anything to make you uncomfortable?"
She laughed and said no, of course not. Why do you ask that? (So we had
a 1 minute conversation and all is well)
But maybe a "dance environment committee" could draft a short list of "How
to make sure we help new dancers feel as comfortable as possible". or
something.
A few things on my personal list:
When I dance with a new dancer that seems concerned
they aren't getting
it. I often encourage them: "You are doing
great"
We notice when a dancer has been sitting out, and ask
if they want to
dance.
I try to learn new-ish dancer's names. (We have
sticky name tags at the
front desk, and they often fall off)
I try to introduce new dancers to other dancers I
think they might have
something in common with, or are in their age group.
We personally invite them to go out with our
"after the dance, get a
snack group" which we announce sometime in the 2nd
half.
